Spherical rod-ended front steering

Is there a company out there that makes spherical rod-ended front steering pieces? I'm mainly looking for the tie rods but a center link wouldn't be bad either. I would think these are common parts on any thirdgen set up for road racing, etc. Would these really make a difference over the stock pieces? What else could be done to firm up the steering on our cars. I've already done the major suspension mods. And what's the deal with any of these aftermarket steering boxes? Do these have a lower ratio than what is stock on '91-'92 Z28's with G92 (does that option code even have to do with the steering box?). Thanks in advance for your input.

Steve

Baer makes a bump steer kit that has a rod end on it. It replaces both the outer tie rod and the adj sleeve. I dont know of any replacement part for the inner tie rod that has a rod end.

Here's a link to the Baer kit. Scoggin Dickey has the best price:

Ok, I've been thinking about his idea ever since I read this thread. I own a machine shop and make a heim joint adapter to adapt heim joints as ball joints for Yamaha Banshee ATV's. (top pic) I haven't checked if the taper is the same for a camaro spindle, but if it isn't I can easily change if to match the taper of the camaro.

I am wondering how much flex there is in a stock tie rod? Anyone have any data on this?

In looking at heim joints I can get 3/4" heavy duty teflon lined ones from Jeg's for $16 each. $16 x 4 is $64. Then I have to make the heim adapters, and make the tie rod itself. In making a set for myself I'd probably have $150 plus in them, but is it worth it? I know the "look" of surprise on the alignment guys face would almost be worth it when he saw them, but I've got better things to spend my money on.

And, can someone please explain the need for a bump steer kit for our cars? I fully understand the principle, but didn't realize our cars had a bump steer problem.

Also for all of you that run heim ends on your car, or anything else for that matter, here is a pic of "Seals-It" rod end seals. I've been using these for years in industrial applications and have recently turned the ATV community on to them. They are cheap, about $3 each for 3/4" rod ends and increase the life of the rod end substantially.

Thanks-Dan

Dan,

for a stock ride height thirdgen, you don't need a bumpsteer kit, but the more you lower them , the more of a problem bump steer becomes.

i assume you understand how bumpsteer works, so i won't explain much more than that.

Dan,
Your set-up looks good. There is one difference however with the Baer kit. Baer allows you to adjust the positioning of the heim joint using spacers. Here's the link to the Baer site for more detailed info:

I do understand what bump steer is, but in 144k miles and numerous autocross events and a road race school on race tires I've never experienced it. I thought there might be some other camaros, possibly not IROC's without the upgraded suspension that might possibly need the bump steer kit. I'm glad you clarified what the application for the bump steer kit is. My car is low enough now and I don't plan on going any lower with it.

And yes my kit is different. It's not made for a car and I just put it up for comparision. It fits a banshee, although I could easily modify it to be a bump steer kit. But, there doesn't seem to be much of a need for the kit on our cars.

Anyway, that's for replying to the post.
