Baer rear drum to disk conversion?

I currently have the stock 84 open diff rear with drum brakes. I want to
get the baer drum to disk conversion, but have heard that you
need to have some machining done to the stock axles to get
it to work. My problem is that I was also planning on upgrading
to some aftermarket 28-spline axles, Zexel torsion diff and a
aluminum rear end cover (basically beefing up the rear). My main
question is what axles should I specify to eliminate the need for
further machining to get the baer disks to bolt right up. I
would appreciate any help from people who have done this
swap and know what machining needs to be done on the stock
axles also.

Exactly what machining is supposedly needed to make them fit?

An axle is an axle, 26 or 28 spline.

I was a little mistaken, some one said that they had to have the
axle flanges turned down to get proper clearance for the rotor.
Is there any way this can be avoided, with proper part selection
when I upgrade my rear?

OK, I see. You are partly correct here. You can't put a 3rd gen rear 1LE sized rotor on a drum brake axle without some machining of the flange. I would think Baer would address this issue...for the $$$ they get they should.

I PMd ya.

If you want to use the Baer 12 inch rotor rear kit, then you must have your flange machined down to little less them 5.9 inch diameter. This is done in order for the axle flange to fit inside the rotor. If you are getting new aftermarket axles, you can ask them to machine them down when you place your order. Its not a big issue.
