brake fitting size Q's

I had to replace the rear brake lines on my 86 Z. I have the two rear lines that go to the drums connected with no problems using the fittings that came on the lines. The problem lies in that when i went to connect the single line that comes from the MS to the rubber line at the rear axle, it didnt fit. The metal line's fitting slid into the fitting that connects to the rubber line. What size is the fitting that i need to connect to the rubber line? Ive been to the store twice with no avail. I know this is hard to understand so any and all help is appreciated.

are you buying double flared lines? think you need bubble or european flare. slid an open end wrench on the line that will tell you the size, should be 3/16 or 1/4 in american sizes, not sure in metric.

I believe it should be M1.0?

What is the fitting called? Im new to all this so im getting cofusued with all the talk about flare, double flare, inverted flare and balloon fittings. All the fittings are stock from the factory, so would i be looking for 1/4 inch like the lines are or something metric like Apeiron said?

A double flare looks like a "V"; it's "double flared" because it's made into a "V", then the ends of the "V" are folded over again to make a shorter "V". So it's a double-thick "V" flare.

The ISO flare, aka "metric flare", aka "bubble flare", looks like a bubble.

Sorry if I missed something, but to clarify: You replaced both steel lines on the axle, and the rear hose (from the body to the axle). The hose connected perfectly to the lines on the rear axle. But, the hose doesn't connect to the body line.

Your '86 Z28 should have metric fittings... all 84-up f-bodies have them. Did you replace the drum's wheel cylinders, too?

My guess is that you replaced the wheel cylinders and axle lines with 82-83 parts, which were standard "SAE" double flare connections, and that you also got an SAE hose. So the axle hookups work fine, but when you try to put the SAE hose against the Metric body line, they don't match.

Do you have a manufacturer and part # for that rear hose you bought?

Here; I found this link; you need Adobe Acrobat Reader for it. Look on page three, they have drawn up an ISO bubble flare. Is this what your steel brake lines had on them?

I replaced the drivers side rear hardline. I left the pass. side hardline alone, it was in good shape. I replaced the hardline coming from the MS too. The rubber line connected to the body i left alone. I didnt change the wheel cylinders either. My lines make a single flare at the end. Sounds like i just need to find a metric fitting to connect the hardline from the MS to the rubber line by the rear. I know its a flare, but can anybody verify the size? Is it M1.0?

Did you check out the link I posted? Do any of your flares look like the ISO one? That hard line from the Master Cylinder is a pain to replace, isn't it? Did you get a new one or a junkyard one? Grabbed mine from an '84 with no transmission- it was cake to take the line out, and then it was hell trying to snake it under my '86 without bending it un-necessarily.

For some reason the link didnt open for me. Im putting in a new one though. Its going pretty good, nothing too difficult, the lines bend pretty easy, if only this fitting wasnt an issue. Can anybody verify the size though?
