Iron vs Aluminum drum differences
Iron vs Aluminum drum differences
On my 92 RS I have rear iron drum brakes. I know that some Z28's had aluminum drums. What is the differences between the 2? I have heard the aluminum drums do not have spacers like the iron drums do. Why is this? Are there any differences in the front brakes between the Z28 and the RS?
The Aluminum Drums are thicker then the Iron Drums so a .187 thick spacer was added by GM to maintain the same spacing with the 16" wheels.
The front Disc brakes are the same for for the RS & Z-28, 10.5 rotors with the Iron Calipers.

Thanks, so if I went to the dealer and ordered front rotors, calipers, and pads they would all be the same part # regardless if I ordered them for a 92 rs or a 92 z28 right? One other question, are the pads the same for the aluminum and iron drums? Thanks again for your help. I really do appreciate it.
I know they arent the cheapest place to go, but I have had problems in the past with generic stuff and just dont have confidence in them anymore. If you know somewhere to get them cheaper with good quality then by all means let me know.
Try www.gmpartsdirect.com , but you will need part numbers.

Drums have shoe's, not pads. I wouldn't go to a dealer for brake stuff, I also would stay away from generic parts. Most retailers have different 'grades' of parts--don't get the cheap grade. Also, on the drums, get a 'small parts kit' as well as the shoes. The kit includes most of the hardware(springs/clips and stuff), it's just a few bucks.

Agreed; never buy the cheapest pads/shoes. I bought cheap $15 front pads once... by "Metalazar" or something like that... nearly killed myself. Damn things heated up and left me with nothing. I went back to Bendix, and haven't "experimented" with other brands since.

Thanks for the tip on the hardware kit. I'll try to get them once I go to buy everything at once. I definitely wont be getting the cheapo stuff either. Anyone have anything to say about the Durastop pads and shoes? Are they any good? Thread
