I want to do a rebuild on the drum setup on my car. I was just wondering if anyone can give me advice on what I should replace in addition to the following (or if you think I don't need to replace anything on the list):

shoes
drum
cylinder
brake cables
return springs x 2
adjusting screw assembly + actuator lever

 

I got a kit that had all the small parts & springs. That way you can save yourself the time in getting all of it seperately.
There's a kit for the L & R side.

You pretty much have it covered, & that's good your replacing the pistons.

How do you feel about replacing the rear wheel bearings & seals? Now is the time.
It's kind of involved, but not to bad. You would have to remove the axles, which isn't as hard as it sounds. Oh and you'll need a 6' piece of rebar to knock the bearings out.

It's purely optional, but it's one of those "since your there" things...

What did you say was best to knock the bearings out? rebar?

What exactly is that? Sorry.

 

Rebar = reinforcing bar, for concrete; typically about ½" in diameter with a sort of criss-cross pattern on it

Rebar works good; ¾" pipe also works; almost anything that you can stick through the axle tubes and not have it splinter when you hit it, will work.

 

Thanks for the tip on the kit. I think I'll leave the bearings for now though. I'll wait till the differential needs work to do that.

 

....and that 6' piece only cost about 5 bucks over at HomeDepot ...
A lot cheaper than the GM tool.
