put a set of formula rims on my car...do i really need the rear wheel spacers?

i had them on there and the guy at the shop said that i shouldnt have them on there cuz then the rim doesnt rest on the lip on the rear axle and all the weight is now on the bolts which isnt good....so we took out the spacers and the tires didnt rub anything....so why was i told to put them on in the first place...thanks

Well, I have a 90 T/A and I put formula wheels on it and I didn't have to use any spacers.

If you have iron drums then use the 1/8" spacer, otherwise leave them off.
