Help on removing steering shaft ??

I've taken out the 11MM bolt that holds the rag joint housing to the steering box, and the 15MM bolt that holds the shaft in by the firewall, from what I understand the shaft is supposed to retract or slide so you can clear the steering box splines.. I can't get the thing to budge.. Which direction does the shaft retract from? Do i push up towards the firewall? It doesn't seem to wanna move.. I'm trying to replace my rag joint and need this back together asap so if anyone has an idea please shoot me a response.. If I can't get it I'm gonna just put the bolts back in for now

wiggle while pushing down towards the front of the car, hold the shaft in the middle somewhere. i believe thats how i got mine out when doing headers, it was a PITA probably the first time eve lose and taken out.

hmm wait a minute after looking at some pics i think i had to wiggle and push up to get the bottom put first and then slid down the top. ur stumping me

It should slide up toward the firewall. I had to move my entire column before it would clear though. There's four bolts under the dash that holds the column bracket you need to remove if I recall.
