I have a chance to buy a 1LE front brake set-up from a guy that upgraded his Origional 1LE Z-28 to Baer brakes. I need to know what would be a reasonabe/normal/average price for me to pay for what he has ???
Secondly, I have a 89 Iroc & I need to know are the 1LE Spindles the same as on my Iroc or are they diffeerent ? What about the calipers.
Thanks for the help, Bruce

Bruce,
I just finished a 1LE conversion on my Z28, The 1LE spindles are different in part #`s and the way they appear. The spindles on your 89 iroc will work with only a few hours of elbow grease. the perches that hold the iron caliper must be cut off leaving the splash shield holes with the spindle. the two shield holes are the tapped out to like 12mm. by 1.5 or something, then there are "c " shaped brackets that bolt to the spindle. the caliper carrier is then bolted the "c" brackets, then the pads clip into caliper and the caliper "pins " into the carrier. It`s really easier than it sounds. It took me 3.5 hrs to do the conversion, I am however an auto mech by trade. but still can be done at home with regular tools. Check with sphon, thats were i got my carriers, they have a cd for this. I found instructions with pictures with a simple searh on google. The calipers can be bought new at an autozone for 65.00 i think plus core. (I gave them my single piston cores and possibly an incorrect phone #)hee, hee........ any way you will need the flex hoses they just wont reach the PBR caliper. The banjo bolts are also different, so you`ll have to come up with those, I used a bolt from dorman it was for a 93- up escort I think.
The brackets, bolts, hoses, calipers, drilled/slotted rotors, pads, (Wagner 100.00)bearings, seals and everything else ran me round 625.00 http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/487725

Thanks for the reply Scott, Nice looking big block 3rd gen you've got .
The fella that replaced his 1LE brakes & has them for sale thought that the 1lE spindles were completely different than the ones that came on my 89 Iroc. It's not a problem he just said that the 1LE spindles were worth $170 for a core charge/ exchange thru Baer "which is what he swapped to". He thought the calipers between the the two were the same though & I figured that a 1LE system would have a different "high power caliper" . Not a big issue, I was just asking so I would know the Facts.
Thanks Again, Bruce

I'm not much of a mechanic, but I moded the spindles with no difficulty. I went with the Spohn kit, and though I don't recall the exact price, you can access his site from Thirdgen. By the way, while the CD is very helpful, it can cause some minor problems: For example the CD drills and taps with metric while the Spohn kit suggests SAE and supplies SAE bolts. Note the following thread for some pics that may prove helpful:

By the way, you also might try a search. There's been a ton written.

I cant rember what part store carry them but I have bought replacement 1LE calpiers loaded with pads for not much more than stock calipers. My point is that you dont have to find a 1LE car to have the brakes.
Back when this swap was a lot more popular than it seems to be now, Auto Zone was the cheap place to get the calipers. I got two calipers from them... one was brand new. Reportedly these companies replenish their stock with new calipers. If you get lucky, you may end up with two new calipers.

Yea both of my calipers that I bought in the spring were brand new pbr`s. They also had a loaded option through Autozone, which I ordered, they are MORSE calipers and pads, I think they were 199.00. I was hoping they came w/carriers, they do not and the pads were of low quality. I ordered unloaded and got FENCO calipers for 65.00 they were new and work great.
