Wheel Mods?

My dad was telling me about some of the things that he had done to his Z28 ('73) when he had the car, but one thing he was telling me really caught my attention because I've never heard of it being doe before.

On his Camaro, he had a set of Cragar S/S wheels. What he told me was that he had brought the wheels into some shop, and they actually widened the wheels by welding 2" to the inside of the two rear rims and 1" to the inside of each front rim.

I was just wondering, are there any places that still do this sort of thing? And can this be done to cast aluminum wheels?

yes, it is still done, but i've only seen it done to steel wheels. I don't know about aluminum wheels, though.

Yes, I did my wheels at home. The rears are now 9 3/4 wide.

Now the next cool thing to do is cut the fronts down to 6 inch and run 205 front tires on your drag car. It's sure fun to go to the track with stock wheels and run mid 11s.

Spiffy!
Did you just use another set of wheels to make the wider wheels?

Only one set of four. All you do is cut the front wheels on center and then cut the rear 2 inch offset to the inside and you just swap the rear part of the wheels and you get 6" fronts and 9.75" rear wheels.

Right now I only do things for fun, trade or to see if it can be done.

Here in so-cal a couple of shops do them every day. ( one that I go to allways has 100 or more in house at any time.) You will find eveyone gets $135 per wheel or $500 a set.

Jerry,
What are you using to cut the wheels? That seems like it would be the hardest part Do they balance out on a tire machine easily?
Thanks for the info.
