hmm, yeah. on most cars, the wheel cyl is bolted to the backing plate w/ 2 small bolts, but on the 3rd gens, all it has is a retaining clip. did your rear brakes lock up on you or something? ive never seen the backing plate get torn,.

no, the previous owner of my 3rd gen must have not changed it or taken good care, the brake pads were crap, the drum was all wavy and missing 1 spring, on top of that it was all greesed up inside with brake dust and brake fluid.... all that plus currosion when I tryed to remove the retaining clip and then pull the whell cylinder away, it also pulled a little bit of the backing plate as well.... :lala:

ouch. i guess the best thing to do would be grab a new plate off a junkyard car, make sure its in good condition though. or, you could use this situation to justify upgrading to disk rear

Question, confused

Hello to all, I went a junkyard today to get myself a backing plate for my left rear drum brake. I got down to the hub and the backing plate and 3 bolts? I asked them to take off the hub they said, "they couldn't do that, that they would have to take apart the axle." I argued with him and I let him win, so here I am asking, "Do you have to take apart the axel for it or are there only 3 bolts and the hub holding it in place?" Thanks for the help, get back quick, I'm going back to the junk yard if you don't have to take apart the axel, but they close at 5 pm Eastern US time.

Look I'm sorry for the stupid question, but I have no directions for this, I'm doing it on hoping to get it right. I just need to know, I'm going tomorrow morning to get the backing plate and a metal brake line, some how on my the screw was somehow welded in or something, vicegrips finally losened the one on mine, I think the wheel cylinder was in there for one long as time, reason why when I removed the retaining clip and went to remove the wheel cylinder that it tore the backing plate because it had rotted so badly...blah
