Thirdgen weight issues

I used the weight charts on the main site, and i came out with a total weight of....

3,263.4 LBS

1992 Camaro RS
A/C from 305 TBI & TH400
Automatic Trans
Fold rear seat
Rear Defrogger
Dual Exhaust

Does this sound right? I have a feeling my car should have been heavier in it's stock form.....

Does anyone have the weight ratio for front/back on the thirdgen?

Thanks

Why don't you drive it to the nearest weigh station on a freeway in your area and get it weighed?

We can all guess all day long about what it weighs, and some might come closer than others (you just have to figure out which ones), somebody might even hit it dead on the nose. You can find out for sure by measuring it.

Correct me if i'm wrong

I was under the impression you can't just nonchalantly drive your car in-between two semi's and get it weighed at those stations.......

Although if you can, I'll plan on doing it....

Pretty sure you can. Not like these guys are extremely busy.... Well at least here anywasy. Everything is worth a shot. Wasn't the weight distribution on a stock thirdgen f/r 55/45?

As many times as I've done it, in as many different states and different vehicles, I'm convinced it's possible.

I usually try to catch them when there aren't too many paying customers to interfere with.

They weigh axles one at a time; you might find 1820 on the front and 1545 on the rear, or whatever. Pretty easy to calculate what you want to know from there.

Go try it.

My goal is to be under 3,000 and to have a near 50/50 weigh ratio (or at least considerably better then stock)....

Flyinlow, hopefully the car will back on the road by then, shooting for July 31 to have it tuned and race ready for the Night of Fire for the spectator debut. Cant wait to see if this new combo is going to work as well in real life as my paper work says it should. Really need to get the rest of the cage installed (to a 10 point) to keep me safer and fill in the holes in the 4th gen dash. Buddy is gonna TIG them in so sparks wont go everywhere like MIG so I wont have to disasemble everything...that'd lead to another spending spree of "as long as I'm doing this, let's do this"

Kandied, is that badazz car ever gonna be "done"? You got an addiction, lol!!

If you guys have your original invoices you can get a rough estimate of how much your car should weigh. Take the shipping weight and add roughtly 80lbs to it. That accounts for fluids and other Misc items.

My GTA shipped in at 3,389lbs. Add 80lbs and you get about 3,489lbs. TGO says a GTA weighs 3,476lbs. Thats AWEFULLY Close to my numbers.

When I brought my GTA in for emissions they said it weighed 3,780lbs. Both, the testor, and I were in the car during the test. I'm about 180lbs, and the testor was probably about 160lbs. Subtract the two people and you get 3,440lbs. Again, right around the 3,476lb ball park figure for a GTA. Any way you look at it a GTA should be between 3,450 and 3,500lbs fully gassed up and loaded, no driver.

I don't think thats heavy at all. The all mighty "supra" and "Skyline R-34" are pigs too. Coming in around 3,400lbs too. And thats with a V6! Imagine if they had to deal with the weight of a V8 up front!

Interested in lightening the car? Why not buy the fiberglass decklid and rear lexan glass from me. email me if interested at daxnutt@tmail.com Both of them will lighten your car approx. 100lbs. Thats one tenth of a sec off the 1/4 miles times there.

About the scales....

just go when they are closed.... I did... if they have a digital meter.... then it's usually left on, for trucks to weigh themselves I suppose

920-930 KGs front, 650 or so in the rear

go to your local gravel supplier or concrete company.... ask them if they'll weigh your car. maybe slip them a couple bucks if need-be.

what to do

okay, weigh station about 15 minutes from me... but question for all here... how much can really be saved (lbs) by going with expensive alloy wheels??? gotta friend in a mustang with ridiculously costly magnesium wheels that weigh around 5-10 lbs... worth the money/ technically part of the rotating / parasitic assemblies and losses right??

i have race scales here at the house.... 3600 with me in it..

1/8th tank of gas

im 175

fiberglass hood

aluminum heads

a/c still there

no smog

stick shift

t-top car

my car is damn heavy and thats after teh heads and hood!!!

my friends 88 formula we found with no a/c 180lbs driver hard top, automatic weighs at 3475 with him in it... he has no weight reduction stuff at all!

from my best guess t-tops and the extra bracing adds up to an extra 100lbs at least...

btw front to rear on these cars factory was much closer to 60/40 - the formy is 58/42, my car is 52/48 becuase i have alot of weight right off the nose.

i would think the 305 would wieght more, but it would come down to water jacket design, ect. either way, the diffrence would be negligatable.

i was under the impression that a 350 and a 305 used the same block and it was the bottum end parts that made the difference.

I weighed my Formula at the track a couple of times.
3400lbs with 1/4 of gas, N64 spare, jack, tools, and no driver.
Only mod on the car was an ASCD RA1 hood.

I put a set of GTA wheels and a small kenwood bass tube in the car and it weighed in at 3440.

FLYNLOW92rs you might want to check out a local recycling center and try to use their scales. Now that your in SoCal those places are everywhere if you know where to look. My '91 Z with a 350 and auto weighed in at 3440 w/o me in the car. That's with stock 16" rims, spare still in trunk, a half tank of gas, but with aluminum heads. My mom's Durango on the other hand weighed in at 4950! No wonder it only gets 10.5 miles to the gallon.

PHAT89TA, that 3750 on your smog test results is not the actual weight of your car. My smog results have always quoted that number as well. As a result, I always told people that's what my car weighed, but when I weighed it the actual weight was much lower. Hope this helps.

well my car is a hardtop car and it also has a manual tranny, T Top Automatic cars will weigh more. but the car weighed in at 3350 (with me in it, 180 lbs)with AC delete, emissions delete, no rear seats, spare tire or jack. the seats practically weigh nuthing so i figure stock my car weighed about 3430-3450 with a 180lb driver.

since then ive reduced the weight of the car quite a bit more. i now have a dyna-batt mini battery, tubular K member, tubular a arms, rack & pinion conversion, removed the crash bumpers, and a few other minor things (power seat, some braces for the dash and the HVAC)

i think i took around 180bs out of the car with out spending a dime. and another 120 from the K member, a arms, battery, and rack and pinion swap.

i might buy a cervini cowl hood that should take 50 lbs off. its to bad my car isnt a 5.7L because id buy some 113 heads and loose another 50lbs.

my goal is to get the car to weigh around 3000lbs with me in it. (lexan hatch, fiberglass decklid, LS1 gas tank...)

id rather spend the time and money on lightening up the car to improve acceleration, braking and handling, instead of building a crazy engine. to me its more impressive to have a car with hardly any bolt ons to the engine and run in the low 13s.
