Need Better Brakes

I need to improve my braking on my car. A few months ago I had all new rotors, calipers and pads put in, but they dont work good. My brakes sqeek again, also when I reverse and turn all the way to the right or left, they'll sqeek, not constant, but about every 2 seconds, i'm assumming the rotor is bad again. I'm not looking to get all new braking system, just to get a tough rotor that wont warp, and good brake pads that will actually stop the car. The way it is now, you have to push really hard to stop the car. The rear is drums, but i'm hoping i just need the front done, and i can leave the rear, since it doesn't do much work anyways right? Just need some suggestions on what I should get, and I would like to do the work myself if it is possible. I have a chilton book for my car. I had bringing this stuff to the mechanic because he just keeps the car forever. I figure I could get it all done on a saturday afternoon.
