Rattling Brakes

Does anyone have any idea of why my brakes would raddle like crazy when i go over the smallest cracks on the road. i have 4 wheel disc and it is only the back brakes. If it helps any the rear-end is a borg warner.

Any Ideas?

yes i meant rattle, and the year is 1986.

When i take off the tire and put in on the jack stands its as if the whole catelipar is lose if you hit it with your fist it rattles and the 2 bolts are as tight as can be. And its not like its on the one side, its on both sides. I'm clueless

You have the miserable cast iron Delco Moraine calipers. The self adjusting mechanism is more than likely shot like it is on 99% of cars allowing the pad to rotor clearance to open up as the pad wears, which makes them loose and noisy and reduces rear brake effectiveness until eventually they're doing absolutely nothing.

If you do a search for "disc brake rebuild kit" or something similar you'll find a GM P/N for the kit that was used to fix these brakes under recall, it should take care of at least some of your problem.

Chances are the replacements you get will have the same problem. They'll work fine for a while until the pads wear down.

Rebuilding them is easy, you could do both sides in an afternoon if you went real slow, stopped for beers a couple of times and made a run to the parts store halfway through.

The part number is 18019028, it's available from the parts counter at your friendly neighborhood GM dealer. Follow the rebuilding directions in the repair manual of your choice, Haynes, Chilton or Helm, or I can get the text of the recall notice for you.

i just got back from the dealer and they said that they discounted the rebuild for it. Could it just be that dealer or all the GM dealers. Anywhere else i found find it

Even my PBR aluminum caliper brakes did the same thing. I had a ratteling coming from the rear brakes. I put my car up on jack stands and was shocked to see that I couldn't even stop the wheels from spinning if my car was put in gear.

I was able to rebuild one of them, the other was too corroded.

I'll bet your in the same boat!

I got my rebuild kit (for PBR) at Advanced Auto. You might want to check with them. The price was only like $9.

I wouldn't trust an aftermarket kit in this case. I've never tried one, but I wouldn't be surprised if it resulted in the same problem.

You can get the rebuild kit (actually the DELCO MORAIN CALIPER REPAIR kit) from www.gmpartsdirect.com. Search for the part# mentioned above 18019028. They even show a picture of it. If they carry the part # then any GM dealer should be able to get it for you. Maybe you'd have better luck if you just went to the parts counter and asked for the part number. Don't even tell them what it is!!!

Supposedly, there was a design flaw and this repair kit fixes it.

My guess is that pre-rebuilt or new calipers would not have the defect, but the others should know better than me!

You might not be able to tell, but I don't think have any rear brakes, you better fix this one way or another!

If you got rebuilt or new calipers w/lifetime warranty and they froze up again you could always swap them!
