v6 on a race track , need help
v6 on a race track , need help
I have a 84 firebird with a 2.8, this is no stock motor, yes i no it is still a v6.
things ive done to it-
crane cam,
comp cams roller tip rockers
edelbrock highrise intake with 4bbl adapter
holley 390cfm carb
high flow water pump
high flow mech fuel pump
new push rods,
new lifters
removed ac and emissions stuff
now for the tranny,
i have a th700r that was just rebuilt , and added a shift kit to it
i can chirp gears hard holding them out till 5500rpm if i want and it takes it no prob
the car came stock with ws6 suspention so it handles great already
what i want to do is try to win a few heats by tweaking my setup , maybe lower the car , or somthing , nothing major,
anyone have have any ideas on how to get a few more ponies out of this thing or how i can get it to rev faster, or even how to get it to stick to that track so i can drive around someone who will slide from the amount of hp they have.
this track is commonly won by **** burrners so if first heat i go agiant a twin turbo eclipse im ****ed. but other wise i think i may have a good chance , i have 3.73 gears with posi so i can lunch pretty good but i need a bit more .
any tips on seting up for a 1/3 mile oval track will help , ideas on stuff like caster , camber , if stager will help , anything that i can do with my stock suspention to make it stick or upgrade stuff to really make it grip but still be able to take off the line.
thanks agian guys

I cant really help with your question, but have you dynoed that? I'm curious what it puts to the ground.
this is onlya guess taking the avg hp increase rating for each thing ive done to it. it should be around 200-220hp
so you dont have any suggestions on how to increase the compresstion a little , or another way i can get my motor to rev faster?

you could change the pistons or 'shave' the head to get more compression out of it. or spray it.
as far as racing it, you need to determine what type you really want to do.
in drag racing you can remove the front sway bar, in road racing the WS6 stuff is a great start.
in drag racing you have the 90/10 shock setup for weight transfer at launch, in road racing you'd want more spring rate all around.
in drag racing the auto is great for consistancy, in road racing you'd want a stick for better selection.

An alignment can help your setup too, I would run about 3/4* camber and 0" toe. This will help with your turn in and keep tire scrubbing to a minimum. I would keep the caster at the factory setting for drag racing, autocross, and street use. I'm not sure how caster will effect your oval track fun.

I have all three around here somewhere, its in the camaro performance handbook
You should ask Dean. He roadraces his V6 car and he loves it. Aside from the power issue, V6 cars would make great roadracing cars. Less weight, and room for extra bracing in the front. I dont know what the rules are, but you might want to look into aset of spring pertches (so you can cross weight) and specific rate springs. Best investment will probably be in the tires.... that makes the biggest difference.

One thing that should help the engine is ur Heads, u didnt mention any head work other than the rockers, get a set of heads rebuilt to ur cam specs, and have them ported and polished. U can find some exhaust headers to open that up as well. Headers should add on another 8-12HP on the low side of the gain. And the heads will alow better flow to increase engine reving speed.
who makes headers, ive never found them any where everynow and theni hear of someone that fabs a set up, but nothing that would help me get my hands on them, also i have a ho heads they are stock and could prob use the valve job and springs along with a little port and polish, maybe even use 3.4 heads.
