what number represent how wide

what numbers on the tire represent how wide the tire is? I have 245 50 R16. what number represent the wideness? if i go wider am i going up on one number and down on another or what? thank u

In that number:

245 = section width (not the same as tread width)
50 = ratio of height to section width
16 = wheel diamter

Go up on the section width while leaving the aspect ratio constant, everything gets bigger; go up or down on aspect ratio while leaving the section width constant, the tire gets taller or shorter respectively. If you want a wider tire that's about the same height (typical), raise the section width, but decrease the aspect ratio; 255/45 or 275/40 would be sizes with similar outer diameter.
