LS1 calipers: Watch for this problem
I have been through a few sets of brake pads since I swapped to the LS1 front brakes earler this year. I noticed the outboard brake pads of the left front caliper were wearing with a taper. If I remember correctly, this wear would be called radial taper. The pad was worn more on the outer edge than on the edge closest to the hub. This problem was only with the left caliper and only the outboard pad.
I wondered about caliper deflection or "spread" where the "fingers" that clamp the outboard pad are bent and no longer parallel to the rest of the caliper. I measured the brake caliper with my dial calipers and found it to be bent. I measured from the face of the "housing" holding the pistons to the inside edge of the fingers clamping the outboard brake pad. I measured at the outer edge of the caliper and compared the measurements to those at the edge of the caliper closest to the hub. The measurements from the left caliper showed the hub edge of the fingers were 0.1" farther from the pistons than at the caliper bridge. When I looked closely at the caliper I could actually see it was not square. I replaced the caliper (measured it at the parts store to be sure it was OK) and will watch it to see if this happens again.
I sure hope this is not a design flaw with the LS1 calipers having inadequate stiffness.

Caliper spread is a common problem with these calipers. The Corvette ones are cast differently to make them stronger, but still suffer from eventual spread when racing.
