irs update!!

a little news on the irs conversion. things are stating to come together pretty good right now. still trying to locate a digital camera so i can post some pictures for everyone though. i'm kinda going a different route with it now then when i first started it off.
on a side note: i believe i may beable to duplicate this swap without many problems, or with minimal cutting(if any) in the end. right now it's all just bolting into place. again when i get a camera i'll get some pictures up.

always nice to see different ideas... get some pictures up when your done. still would like to know why you actually want IRS on your car though as most that have it run from it.

mainly just to do something different. plus in the past i've had good results with it. when the right parts are used, and it is setup correctly it is hard to beat.
it has taken me awhile to find the parts i wanted to use. for example the chunck touts roughly a 9.1" ring gear, and the cv shafts are 33 spline pieces. very strong stuff. it'll hold up to the 550hp i plan on throwing at it.

I'm interested in what you are taking the parts out of. I have tossed around the idea of making my own, using some centersection, and the spindels, them making my own arms and coil-over mounts, and if needed, getting custom shafts. I also though about ditching the mono-leaf on a C4 stup, and making arms, with coil-over mounts.

the pieces are out of a 92' 300zx twin turbo. very strong parts. there are 300zxtt guys out there pushing upwards of 600-700hp without problems from the rear.

hmmm, are you using the 300z spindles/hub/brake assembly? if so what is the stock track width. I am really waiting for picutres, as that would answer all my questions, as I could exactly what peices you are using, and what parts have been fabbed.

basically using just about all of it. the hubs themselves are a 5x4.5 lug pattern like the mustang and many others. unlike the ford hubs there is enough material on them to redrill them and be safe for a 5x4.75 lug pattern. i should have some pictures up this weekend. the track width is 61.5 inches so it's pretty close.

How are you dealing with the removal of the HICAS (i think that is what it is call) system for the 4 wheel steering.

the twin turbo cars were the only ones to come with it. on the na cars they basically just used a control arm. i'll probably just make my own tie rods so to speak with hiems at each end. another thing i've found out is that on all non turbo 300zx's and infinity q45 they use a smaller 8 inch ring gear. i'm going to check and see what the width of the q45 rear is also, but i was told once that it was the same. it may be another case of parts sharing among different models that all car companies do. the r200 is used in a ton of different cars and is known to hold up to around 400hp at the wheels. the r230 which i have is only found in 300zxtt from 90-96 and in the new nissan armada's.

Just curious, but did you think about trying to use the rear steering or will you just eliminate it? Sounds like you have a pretty good swap going on. Keep us informed, and good luck!

i have considered it. i'm not 100% sure on what or how its controlled. i have a few buddies that are into the z cars and could probably ask them. i dunno though. a irs 4 wheel steer 3rd gen. sounds kinda cool. heh heh heh. really it isn't a true rear steer at all. it more or less just turns the rear wheels +/- 2 or 3 degrees at the max.

There were two ways of controling it. in 90-93 or 94 it was hydrolicly controled. in the later years 95-96 or 94-96 it was electronicly controled. I would assume you could make it work with electonic incarnation, with some creative engineering. But if i recall correctly from my Z days, it only activated above 40mph, and deflected a maxium of 3*, I am sure some of the Z forums would have indepth info on the controls, the sensor inputs for it etc. If it is packagable, it would be a neat feature to include. But it might also make for some interesting suspension setup to get the maxium handling performance out of it.

you are right about the speed issue of it. i know that some people have said that at times it tends to create a feeling of oversteer. some of the guys driving them around here that i know end up taking it off. i'll probably just take it off, but keep it around in case i decide to make it work one day.

just a quick question for the suspension guys on the forum. where would be a good starting point for rear coil-over spring rates. i was thinking somewhere around 250# to 275#. i know, i know..... whats the car going to be used for. well mostly street with some drag racing. on the rare occasion some auto-x. i am really just looking for a starting point. i will be using adjustable shocks also. thanks in advance

Re: irs update!!

Don't see them, using Firefox.

BTW, the NA Z32's have a 4.09 rear end ratio I believe and there is no need for the HICAS eliminator. TT guys actually do NA rear swaps doe the ratio. HICAS eliminator brackets can be had cheap as well. I currently have a 1993 Z32 and I was thinking the C4 IRS. I'm VERY excited about you doing a Z32 IRS setup, they are VERY strong.

Any update in 4 years?

I'd guess in 4 years time the pics are no longer hosted.

- About a year back there was an article in hot rod following the fabrication of stuffing a C4 rear under a 4th gen, all of which could be carried over to our platform, just a few differences such as axle length.

Re: irs update!!

A good friend of mine did this back in 02 with his yellow camaro convertible. It rode great and handled well. He actually made mounts for the stock dog bones.

I think I remember that car. An IROC, right? The guy had vision problems or something? I thought I remembered a tinted windshield as well. Either way, I'd love to see it done. If for nothing else than to just see it done.

Re: irs update!!

That was him. We grew up together in IL, then I left for the military, when I came back to IL after I got back he was in the process of finishing it. He finished it and it worked out great. I haven't talked to him in almost 3 years now that I live in AZ. I will try to look him up.
