Ok!!!! i am back, i previously had a post relating to this subject...but my parents are letting me pick out tires for my bday! sweet huh? ha anyways, i need some help finding the right tire!! im willing to spend no more than about $130 each tire (that is like max max max price) i was really interested in the Good Year-Eagle F1s, Firelli Pzero neros, possibly some Nittos, yokohamas, and also BFG g-force kdws!!!! im rolling with my stock rims right now, and currently i have 255/55/16s Kumho ECSTA supras. Im looking for something primarily meant for good handling in DRY weather, and somewhat decent in wet weather.......i do not wish to go to a size 17" tire. again, i want the best tire meant for handling, and i do love the look of the wide tire. i want both tires front and rear to be the same size as well......any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! thank you guys, and much love to TGF!

 

I did a lot fo shopping for tires. Obviously, as many will tell you, go to Tirerack.com to get tires. They have all the popular brands and the reviews really helped me. I think a 245/50/16 will fit your car better than the 255/55/16, plus there is a hell of a lot more to choose from in the 245 size. Personally, I think Michelin is the best brand tire out there. I have the Pilot Sport Zero Pressures and they are amazing. In your price range, I would go with the Michelin Pilot XGT H4. They got very good reviews, and are just at your limit. Pirelli's are notorious for road noise, so I would be careful choosing them. As far as Eagle F1's they are a tad bit more than $130, about $153. But they are good tires, you just have to justify the money spent. Don't know much about the jap tires, Im sure some are good, but stick with Michelin, Good Year, they wont steer you wrong.

 

My next tires will be Kumho MX's in 245/45r17 and 275/40r18. Fairly cheap tires and extremely good performance from what I've heard. Not sure what price they'd be for 245/50r16, or if they even make them, though.

EDIT: Just checked, they don't make the Kumho MX for your size tire, but they do make a new Sport KU31 at $91 each for 245/50r16.

EDIT 2: Actually, I'm considering those tires as my next tires now. I'm not going to be buying tires til probably next summer though (assuming my worn Goodyear F1-GS tires last this summer). They are cheap and look like they will perform very well in the wet, based on the tread pattern.

I would recommend staying away from the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's.
I have had them on the car now for about 2 years. They were a very very very good tire when I first installed them with a need-to-get-used-to slight loss of feel during transition for a split second that gave a slight unease feeling for a week until I was very used to them. Great tire though when new.

Trouble with them over time is the rubber does harden too much and the sidewalls do develop more and more of a bobble under straight line cruising with a very stiff suspension. The tires flex but the suspension doesn't so the little bobble goes undampered. once set into a corner it goes away but it does have an annoying feel when cruising with a passenger slowly for their comfort.

My next purchase is definately going to be Toyo Proxes RA-1's in a 255/50-16 but are $235 per tire. I still like the old Firestone SZ50EP's but they are dicontinued.

 

I did about 2 months of research before buying mine and eventually went for the BFG G-Force KDWS 245/50ZR16. I really wanted the KDW, but BFG was on national backorder and I could literally find NO ONE with even one KDW. The new retread of the KDW is wicked looking, too!

These handle pretty well all around down here in Florida. Can't say how they'd handle in cold weather, though. I routinely take 90* corners at speed and have yet to have these break away on me. The only way I can break them from the pavement is if I gun the throttle in a U-turn.

Anyone else try these things?

P.S. If you go for the KDWs, call BFG first as a lot of resellers will take your money and hold it (refund is typically not an option) until BFG releases this size.

BTW I came home to find a set of 275/40YR17 Goodyear F1 GS-D3 sitting on my porch. I love coming home to presents I ordered.

GS-C’s were originally sold as a wet weather performance tire. FWIW, as far as my experience goes with them they pretty much suck, they get hard and dry rot quickly, don’t work well in told weather at all and even in warm weather aren’t a particularly good tire.

 

Just got my BFG G force KDW(traditional tread) 245 50 16 on my iroc. The absolute best tire I have ever owned. I have had Toyos, Goodyears, Bridgestones, Michelins. They hook up incredibly with 450 lbs of torque. The dry and especially wet traction is amazing. And they have a tread rating of 300. Highly recommended. Some reviews said loud road noise, I have not found this.

I recommend BFG KDWs. Very good tire. May try KDs if I can afford them Have not liked any Goodyear tire. Have not been impressed with Kumhos and Yokohamas either.

 

Check out Cooper Zeon 2XS 245/50R16. I have a set and really like them. They are W (168 mph) speed rated. I have been to two road races and run them on the street in the dry and wet and have been very satisfied. I think I paid $140 each for them.

 

everyone that has recommended the KDW s are you talking about the new treaded KDW or the original ones

 

I've only used the KDWS Traditional Tread design. The New Tread KDWs are supposed to be a little better all around than the Traditional Tread.

 

i do like the new design, it looks pretty sick. but i dont think tirerack carries the size i want :-\

 

OK so I thought I would throw my input in if it counts....

I work at a Tire Shop and have heard/seen many different types and stories behind them.

One thing I noticed on the first day I started, Michelin = SOFT SOFT sidewall, they flex so easy its scary sometimes. I love the look of the Goodyear F1's but they can be pricey for some.

What my recommendation for you and what I am going to be purchasing here soon, Goodyear TripleTred. Great wet/dry handling, stiffer sidewalls and harder rubber for good good performance. They make a little bit more road noise then most, but if your in it for performance and still wanna stay within normal prices, I'd go with those.

If they are too nosiey for you and are perfect performance for you, most Goodyear shops will take those back and put on ComforTreds with little or no price change if you haven't driven on them too much. The comfortreds are made with a softer rubber so less road noise, little more for comfort then performance.

When I get this thing running, it is going to be my track/autox/learning by crashing into walls at the track car, road noise doesn't mean crap basically.

When I get my dads car or if I decide to buy another Camaro, a vert though, for cruising, I will use quiter tires as I won't be needing maximum performance for a cruising car.

 

i like those triple tread tires, but i dont think they have them in the size im looking for. i think i might go with the KDWs, Potenzas, or yoko avs 100s

 

They have them in all sizes from what I know, I work at Fountain Tire, we sell Goodyears all day long . Basically if they don't have them in stock, they can most likely be ordered no problem. Check it out, they are sweet tires, and no I'm not trying to sell product, I don't make **** all and I'm leaving soon, but I do like the rubber

I was at my local tire store today. The Cooper Zeon 2XS in 245/50R16 have gone down to $119 each.

 

I'm picking up a set of Fulda Extremo's.. excellent tires in my opinion. Handle very well in wet conditions even with about 50% thread, superb on dry. Yokohama AVS ES100 would be a good choice too IMO. I want to try a set of Toyo Proxes one day, but for less money (the Toyo's are out of your budget, wickedly expensive) the Fulda's are excellent in my opinion. .. check them out.
