If tires stick out of fender, will they rub?

I've got some drag radials. 275/50/15. requires a 7.5" rim min.

My buddy offered me two 15x8" rims for cheap. Problem is the backspacing is 3.75". So what happens is, the tires will stick out about 1-2" out of the fender.

So on a hard launch at the track (26.1" tall tires), if the suspension goes down. Think the fender will hit / rub the tire?

if so, whats the solution? air bags, or find rims with a 4.50" back spacing?

edit: sleepy joe makes typos in sizes when asking questions!

You could limit the rear suspension travel to prevent contact but then I think that would mess up the launch (prevent it from squating and planting good). Or if you didnt care how the car looked you could cut or roll the fenders.

well first of all you say you have 16" drag radials.. your buddy is offering you "15.8"? i assume this is 15x8 inch wheels. the 16" won't fit a 15" so you will need new rims or tires right there... your choice.

the factory backspacing is roughly 4.5" front and a +16 more in the rear which is another 1/2"-3/4" depending on your needs and options. fitting a wider tire then normal and the improper backspacing your just asking for trouble. now if the width was much more narrow you could make it work but yes if you plant the car hard with some real power you'll mess something up.

solution. get a rim that fits your backspacing and tire or get the right tire for your cheap rims that the friend is offering. good luck.

Hah, yeah typo on the size. 275/50/15 or 26.1x10".

So air bags won't help eh? I'm having trouble finding a cheap rim in 15x8 in the backspacing everyone recommends for this size (275/50/15) which is 4.50" bs. These are just for the drag tires, so they can be fugly ugly.

Personally I like to see 130+mph on the timeslip, rather than perdy rims

130+ with nice rims is that much better...

you can get 15 and 16" rims for your application very very cheap. just look around, although i suppose it depends on your budget but 50-70 a rim isn't bad at all for a new rim.
