Pulling out the steering shaft.

I just posted this under another thread but I realised I should probly have made another since its a slightly different topic.

How much of the wheel did you have to take of before you could start pulling the shafts through?

Im doing this RIGHT NOW and am a little worried if its going to work. I dont need to pull them out totally, but I need the solid shaft (comming out of the firewall) to move back up inside the car a few inches in order to gain access to an area on the block.

What the procedure in getting it to do that? Do i have to pull all the ignition lock stuff out? Or can I just undo the big nut under the wheel pad and slide it all up?

I'm not really sure I understand what you want to do. Do you want to remove the lower part of the steering column (the part inside the engine compartment) for access to something or the upper part of the column inside the car?

The shaft inside the upper column won't move unless you totally disassemble the column. The lower shaft can be simply unbolted and removed.

Its all ok... i figured it out. Basicly I undid the top of the intermediate shaft (in teh engine bay) then went inside and undid the 3 firewall bolts and the 2 under-dsh bolts.

This allowed my to pull the whole assembly out of the fire wall and gave me the access to the block I needed.

In my RHD converted car, there was no way to get a tool on the back 2 manifold bolts with the steering shaft there. All done now.

Must be because the engine is offset to the right side for LHD. In a LHD car, that's mostly to clear the steering stuff.
