wheel and tire upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade my wheel and tire package. I have a 91 rs which came stock with 15" rims i beleive. The person i bought the car from put the 16" stock rims on the car with p235/55r16 tires, and that's causing the front tires to rub. Would that be a width or profile problem? Secondly, i'd eventually like to put some american thunder torq thrust II's on my car, i'd like to go with a 17" rim. Is this possible? and if so what width should i go with on the front? And if i use a 17" rim, what tire size should i use?

if you go with a 17" wheel, and you dont want to have to modify anything, you're gonna have to find a 17x8" wheel....otherwise if you go with 17x9 you will need a 2" spacer on front and back, which the average price for a set of 4 spacers is around $180, but i got mine cheaper b/c i bought them off a member on the boards...

how would my handling be affected if i went with 17x8 on the front and 17x9 on the rear? i'd like to set my car up as more of an autocross car. so handling is rather important.

well it wont really change much at all, if any. the front 2 will be the same width, and the back two will only be an inch wider, which just means more grip...and as long as you get yourself a not-so-low profile tire, you wont have to worry about too rough of a ride...

you don't need 2" spacers for 17's unless your using a wheel with a 4th gen offset. their are many people with 17x9.5" wheels running 275's front and rear with out modifications. I run an 18x9 with 265/35 front and rear with no modifications and they don't rub.
get rims with the right offset and back spacing and you should be good

Why would he need adapters? are you sure these were 3rd gen wheels that were on there?Probably the profile of the tire if so.Theres guys on here that have 275's with no problems. What size tires are you planning on running on the 17s? With the proper backspacing, offset, and tire size you could run a 17x9 in the rear without rubbing. Theres guys on here running 18x10s without adapters.

the wheels on the car now aren't stock. i didn't put them on either. the 91 rs supposedly came stock with 15" rims. the rims on the car now are 16" rims, but they're camaro rims. the tires on it now are 235/55 and the fronts rub on turns. that's the only rub i have. as for tire size on the 17s i dunno. that was one of my questions. the rub on the front seems to be a width problem to me but i really don't know.

Wheel offset/backspacing and overall tire height causes the front wheels to rub when turning.
One of the best 17x9.5" wheels for the 3rd gens are the R15 Firehawk wheel. With 275/40/17 on my buddy's 82 Trans Am, it has a very slight rub at full lock.

I traded my 91 rs in for a 92 z28. Still third gen and still the same tire question. After adding the hood i decided my car was still missing something. So i took it upon myself to answer my own question. And the answer- Yes, 17" american racing torq thrust IIs will work on a third gen. I'm running 17x9s with 275s for rubber, and I haven't noticed any rubbing. So there it is. They work.

Is the car only rubbing when the wheel is close to full lock? The steering box that came w/16" wheeled cars doesn't allow the same movement. Switching to a different box might solve the problem.

spacers? i don need no stinkin spacers. LOL nah, i bought the 2" spacers just in case, but i didn't need them. the center of the wheel is indented enough to allow for the width. you only need the spacers for 4th gen wheels because the wheel center is almost flush with the rim. I could be wrong on that theory, but it seems right. an the rims fit with no spacers.
