loose steering column at tilt
loose steering column at tilt
Need some advice please.
My 89 camaro has a loose steering column at the tilt mech, actual steering wheel is tight. Was receipt in car from previous owner that just said " steering wheel tightened", so I'm wondering if this has happened before and is loose again.
I've seen the posts about the loose screws that seem to be located a mile in the steering column. Doesn't look like something I want to try without some help.
First, is this dangerous? Will I loose steering soon or do I have a while?
And Second, is it just easier to replace the steering column with one from a salvage yard? Called a salvage yard, said only 89 would fit and wanted $120 for it.
Thanks for any help/info provided!

Not that hard to repair the column, remove wheel, t/s switch, ignition switch, pull tilt pins out, there are three external torx screws that are the problem, pull them out 1 at a time, install loc-tite and reinstall, not bad to do at all, first time took me about 2 hrs, now I can do it in like 30 minutes. If your not sure ask any GM mechanic, if he has been around for any time at all he knows what it is and how to repair it. Good Luck!

Fix it instead of replacing it, use the blue stuff on the bolts too. I say fix it because if you replace it the replacement will probably become loose itself someday.
