steering/aligament problem

so hear it goes. My freinds 91 Gta was drifting to the right becouse the pass. tire was toe'd out. after puting it on the rack to do an aligment i got the camber and caster set but when it came to do the toe i was turning the sleeve and it didnt move. the tie rods were bottomed out in the sleeve on the pass. side (the tie rods on the driver side had some play room but the wheel was alredy toed correctly that i didnt have to touch it). i checked to see if the steering wheel is straight and it was locked in the sraight position. so i then turn'd the wheel to pull the tire in and then adjusted the driver side to come in just to get the wheels straight. but now i have a off center wheel.

The steering wheel, steering shaft and input on the steering box is keyed to fit one way and it was perfect before i ajusted it to just get the wheel straight. the flat spot on the gearboxs was up and the pitman arm was straight back to the driver and steering wheel straight but the tie rods on the pass. side were bottomed and the tire would not come in. i checked the length of the tie rods an they were the same length as the factory as for i had changed them, and the centerlink is factory and straight. the steering wheel is half a quaurter of to the left to make the wheels straight

What do you guys think is my box bad or should i make tie rods shorter or what becouse i am stumped. when the steering wheel is straight everything is keyed right but my pass tire is toed out and bottomed. and to temporaroly fix the tire were i have to have a misaligned steering wheel

By the way you described it, you should be able to put the steering wheel straight, turn the driver's wheel in a little more, then have some room on the passenger side.

Is this what is happening? Maybe you just put too much slack on the driver's side. Or am I not following what you have?

Check idler arm height? Should be even with the pitman arm. Worn centerlink/tie-rod?

the pass. side tie would not come in by the tie rod becouse it was in all the way but it was still toe'd out. so i turnd the wheel left to strain the pass. side wheel then adjusted the driver side tire in to make the car not drift. but now the steering wheel is now turned to the left when i am driving straight

With your formula, you should have the sport steering box (quick ratio) that goes 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left, and then all the way to the right.
If you turn back to the left 1 1/4 turn that should be center regardless of where your steering wheel is then adj. your toe.
Some one may have pulled the steering wheel and not got it back on straight. When you said your tie rods are bottomed are you saying both inner and outer? If you have threads left on the inner, you can drop the outer tie rod and turn the sleeve onto the inner to get more threads for the outer.

Don't worry about your steering wheel, what's important is centering the steering box. The wheel can be moved after everything else is set. Sounds like you're good there, though.

Work from the box out. Look for slack in the centerlink, check idler arm height (too low will push pass side wheel out), inner tie rods and so on. Something's either out of adjustment or worn. How's caster and camber settings?
