question about swapping steering boxes

my alignment shop told me that i had slack in my steering box....they suggested not trying to adjust it for slack...so i was wondering what steering box i could swap into my third gen to tighten my steering...I have a 92 RS....I want a more performance steering like in trans ams...what year would interchange or would an iroc or Z-28 box bolt in and give me what im looking for?Or is there somewhere I could buy one new....thanks

From what I understand it could be one of 2 or 3 different steering boxes depending on the level of suspension the car has.
The dealer should be able to tell you which one you have by the rpo codes.

I recently replaced the box in my 86 Z28. There were 2 options available, 1 for all models except Z28 ($199 rebuilt), and one for only the Z28, ($249 rebuilt).

the only ones with a different Box i thought was the IROC with its high effort/ratio one. Meaning it has a faster gearing ratio and is more powerfull to compensate.

edit: you were right there was one for the Base models, one for the Z28/TA, and one for the IROCZ. Dont know about the others but the IROC box was 14:1 ratio. I think the normal one was 12:1?

The best steering boxs to look for are the ones that have a ZX code stamped on the front round cover(800mdl).Mostly installed on Z28, Iroc, GTA, Trans Am modles. They also have a square cover on top with 4 bolts & the center adjusment bolt. The lesser low performance boxes had a round cover on top(instead of square,no adjustment)like the round front cover, which are held on by a C-clip.

I replaced mine with one from agrsteering.com tighted up the steering over the 125,000 mile IROC box I had.

The ratio is pretty quick and has a good steering feel. There not cheap though.

Ive had my AGR box several years now. They come with the fastest ratio GM offered in the 3rd gen.......4TH gens have rack & pinion, not a steering box.You would have to do alot of modifing to install a R&P set-up.Dont know the RPO code, but there is a code stamped on the boxs as stated above,ZX.
