Bilstein sport vs. HD?

Hey guys,

I've got a bad rear shock on my '92 GTA, so as I figure now is a good time to swap all 4 of them all out. I've done a few searches on this site and also on the net and I think I'm going to go with a set of Bilstein's. The car is only street driven so I really don't need any type of racing shock or adjustible, but of course I want to have a nice ride as well.

In looking online I seem to see Bilstein "sport" and "HD" shocks. I guess my first question is, is there any difference or is it just how these websites are naming them?? And if there is a difference, anybody have advice which to get? (or have you rode in a car with either?).

Again, I don't race the car and generally I drive like a sane guy but my car has the WS6 package so I want to have a good sport shock on the car. But I also dont want to put anything that will give me a harsh ride. Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

For the front struts, the HD's are the only option. They don't make sports for the front. For the rear shocks, the only difference in the HD's and the sports is that the sports are one inch shorter and are made for lowering springs and the HD's are made for stock height springs. So if you have stock springs go with the HD's and if you have lowering springs go with the sports.

Ah, good point I never thought about that. I will be sticking to the stock springs for now anyway, one step at a time as I am on a budget. And even if I replace the springs down the road I really don't think I'm going to be lowering the car.

It looks as though I should lean tword the HD's. Thanks for the advice guys.

Ditto the responses

I bought a set of the "regular" ones several years ago when I had the front suspension rebuilt on my '89. I've been very happy with them. My ride has been fine, basically similar to stock, and I've got no more "nose dive" that's so common to cars with worn front struts, but springs that are relatively stiff from the factory. I was so surprised to see how there was no resistance in the stock front struts after they were replaced. It's funny because if we never had to start and stop, we probably would never know they were so worn. I really couldn't tell while I was driving the car. For me, changing them was based pretty much on the fact that the original ones had so much mileage on them, and I wanted all the stock bushings replaced with polygraphite ones. Long tangent, but LSS, I think you'll be pretty happy, too. Good luck.

The shocks shouldn't have anything to do with ride height. They just dampen the spring's movement. The rear end of your car could be light causing the rear to be higher. If you have spring isolators in the rear, try removing those to drop it down some. That's the way I run mine. Or you could add a big sub box with a couple 10's or 12's to drop the rear a little. Beautiful ride by the way.

Ive thought about dropping a box back there to weigh it down....but Im working with some people to try and fab up a low-profile fiberglass enclosure that will replace the rear seats

priorities first though....just got the new clutch in, now I gotta see if anything else needs to be tended to lol

...thanks for the kind words guys

I have the pro kit with the HD's in front and the sports in back as recommended by bistein and shox.com works fine and my rake is not as radical as some - stil pronounced as expected with the pro-kit but not beyond what I expected.

Part.no for Bilstein HD fronts

Hey,

Could anyone provide the part.no for the Bilstein HD fronts?

All I could find on Bilstein.com was:
F4-VE3-C522-H0 Sport Front strut
F4-B46-1021-H0 Sport Rear shock
F4-B46-1121-H0 Rear shock (HD?)

Thanks!

Ken
