Steering box has play, options?
So my steering wheel has about 1" of play and I took a look at it last night and it is the steering box, anything I can do besides replace it? It's an 87 IROC-Z if it matters

Pull it off and bench adjust it. There's a tech article on the montecarloss site that can walk you through. If it's leaking at all, pick up a rebuild kit (mostly seals, bearings and such). I wouldn't crack it open if it's dry though.

I believe theres a way to adjust them without removing them as well. You disconnect the pitman arm connection and measure over-center torque at the steering wheel nut...and adjust the sector lash accordingly.
I know its vague but I cant seem to find the tech article I saw.

You could, possibly, do it with the box mounted, but you would have to disconnect the shaft, arm and hoses to get the box free of oil and by then you're only three bolts away from pulling it out. Pulling the locknut and loosening the adjuster plug could be a pain with it in the car as well.
