I need a 1/8" spacer to mount GTA rims on my 91 RS (drum brakes)

AutoZone sells a universal 3/16" spacer. Would that work ok? I'm running 245 tires, I'd think they'd be ok but thought I'd ask first.

The tire is rubbing up against the rubber snubber (?) and the bracket that holds that to underbody. Why did GM make a .125 spacer if it wasn't needed? I suppose this could be hammered in?

 

...hummmm. I've never seen a factory vehicle with spacers. And the disc rear is the same width as a drum rear.
- anyhow, as long as the studs come through the wheel far enough to PROPERLY hold a lug on, then go with the parts store units. - Also, it may only rub at full extension(as in car jacked up, tires hanging)

 

I used them on my 92 firebird. They are used on car with drums brakes (iron drums) Came on T/A with 16 inch rims.

The aluminum drums are a different thickness. There was a post on these a while back. Do the search. Can probably answer alll your questions.

 

Are the stock ones really 1/8"? I have them laying around here some place from my old drum rear. Didn't think they were that thickness.

From what I've seen I think you should still have proper lug engagement. Buy them, slap them on and take a look for yourself. If they don't work, take them back.

It's possible that all the 16" factory rims required spacers. I have 2 IROCs and both sets of wheels are labeled "front" and "rear" and the rears had spacers between the rotor and the wheel. I bought a wrecked 88 Formula with 16" WS6 wheels and drum brakes and it also had the same spacers between the drum and the rear wheels. The WS6 16" wheels are also labeled "front" and "rear".

The offset is different from front to rear. I might be wrong but it seems like with all the engineering talent GM has they'd have been able to get the offset right in the first place to use 245X50 16" tires and not require spacers to keep the tires from rubbing.

 

Maybe it's just me, but I have never seen spacers on GTAs or Trans Ams with the Diamond Spoke wheels. At least, not on any cars that I pulled the wheels off of.
My 20th TTA never had spacers, and I bought that car new.
I have installed the Diamond Spoke wheels on other Firebirds, and never had to use spacers. Either with the "dimple" wheels or "non-dimple" wheels.

Anyone else?

My TA with the crosslace 16's had the spacers in the back. I had always thought it was because of the drums.

My old 87 formula with rear discs had no spacers and obviously had the stock convex 16" wheels.

And are fenderwells/suspension was not designed around a 245/50r16 tire, it was probably closer designed to the original 205/65 or whatever came on the 15's in 82.
