coil spring indexing help

Tried searching but couldn't find enough detail. WHat I did find is that the bottom coil end is suppoosed to go between two holes, is that correct? My question though is where are those two holes located on the lower control arm.....inside of the perch (engine side), outside, front, back (firewall side)?

Right now the passenger side coil is pretty much centred on the front side and the drives coil is pretty much centred on the back side (before taking them out). I am trying to verify if this is right?

Oh, and do the backs have to be indexed?

thanks

Climb under the car and you'll see the two index holes. No indexing on the rears.

Its in the a-arm portion, theres a cup the springs fit in...in the cup are the 2 holes.

So these holes are covered by the spring coil? I see two holes a little bit inside the coil almost like it is a generic GM a arm and a shock could mount there (i am guessing it is not these). I also see 1 hole down in the groove where the spring sits at the balljoint end....is that one or just a frain hole or something?

The end of the spring will cover one of the two holes, IIRC.

You're right, that's a shock absorber mount. But that's not the holes in question.

They're in the bottom of the round groove that the spring sits down in. They're about an inch apart. You put the spring in such that the end of the spring covers one, but not the other.

So why is it that the spring has to go in this way? Is is bad to go in another way (for functionality)?

The reason I ask is that i did not see a hole near the end of the coil when I was looking at it yesterday so I am wondering if mine are in wrong. THe thing is though that the ride height seems the same at all 4 corners. I would not want to change that by moving the spring back. As far as I know they are stock springs....is there any way to verify that when they are out by a number or a tag or something?

I will take a better peek for those holes today from underneath.

Yes it has to go in that way.

If it's installed any other way, bad things will happen. There will be plagues of locusts, 7 years of famine, and other unspeakable horrors.

Seriously, if you look at the way the springs are made, you'll notice that they're a spiral; somewhat like a screw. Well, so are those circular grooves; they're not level, they're like a screw too. If you index the spring incorrectly, it will have the effect of "unscrewing" the spring from out of its pocket; and that corner of the car will sit higher.

Yikes! don't won't that haha

Well anyway, I just went out to check underneath and I see the 2 holes...they are on the engine side of the spring perch. Mine are not indexed right as the end of the coil is 1/4 turn clockwise past those holes (both springs). But then I looked closer and realized that the coil appears to have broken. There is a piece of coil wedged underneath and the end of that piece is between the 2 holes.

I still don't understand why you start it over by the holes though? The coil only appears to touch on that side so wouldn't that make it bend a bit rather than go up straight (since the control arm is on an angle)?
