Stripped Bolt in Torque Arm
OK, the car is a 91 Camaro with a 305 TBI and a T5 manual trans. The problem lies in the front mount of the torque arm. The mount on my car has two pieces. One bolted to the trans and the other one sandwiches the front of the torque arm between the two pieces. The outer mount is secured by two metal lips and one bolt into the trans case. While driving, the bolt pulled the threads out of the case. I have recovered the mount and the bolt but I'm a bit stuck as to where to go from here. Looks like all a can do is drill and tap. But the aluminum case is giving me seccond thoughts. Any sugestions?
Thanks to all,
Max

Maybe yours is different than mine, but the TA mount that bolts to the trans should have 3 bolts right?
Look kinda like this?

One is a through bolt, (maybe 2?) and one is tapped into the tranny... The tapped one is the one that pulled out on you?
Just making sure we're talking about the same thing.
Drill it out bigger and helicoil it i'd think. That AL is soft like cheese, you could spoon out the threads is so hurtin'. A helicoil should hold in there nicely, and give you some nice strong durable threads.

Hey sorry about taking so long to reply. Yeah, same thing except those two bolts your showing on the bottom are just one in the middle on mine. Anyway, helicoil will do it eh? I thought so, I just didnt know what the margin for error was with the aluminum. Pretty soft stuff...
Thanks,
Max
