can i fit a 16x9.5 rim with 6.25 backspacing on the rear of my IROC?

IM asking here because I know a lot of you have aftermarket rims. Sorry mods if its in the wrong place wasnt sure.

IM sending my rear IROCs out for widening to 9.5 the stock backspacing is around 4 3/5 to 4 7/8. After widening they will be 6 1/4 to 6 3/8 backspace. I have some spacers that range from 1/8 to 1/4 that i can use if i need to. And theres always a big hammer.

My question is for those that have played with backspacing. will this work with out spacers?

The C4 vettes used a 16x9.5 rim with a 255/50/16 and it looks really good. makes the most of the tire and adds a nice fat look to the rear.

I just bought a set of 255/50/16 BFG g-force sports to go on them when i get them back. Never used these before but read good things about them on tirerack.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

I went with 6.5" on my new wheels and I think this new rear is a little shorter to then stock, unfortunately I had to do some hammering but nothing to bad.

i would run a wider tire than a 255 on that larger rim, although with all that backspacing you might not be able. a 15x10 rim runs 5.5 backspacing...so it'll be tight no doubt.

they don't make any wider than a 255 in a 16", except the BFG radial TA which has less bite than most decent 245/50's.
If possible it would be very tight. I would imagine you'll have to run some type of spacer for clearance from the wheel well. - As for the hammer trick, you don't get much on our cars due to the spring location. You don't want the spring to bind in the pocket.

- 255/50's are actually usually reccomended on an 8" wheel, so why spend that kind of dough to widen the factory wheels? There are many people running them on factory 8" wheels.....10mm wider than stock doesn't need 1.5" more wheel.....

Yeah i think it will be close maybe have to run a small spacer.

The reason is i like my IROCs its part of the styling that i like. But i want a wider rim for the rear. And no one makes an aftermarket 88-90 IROC rim in a 9.5 size.

I have 255s on my 8" rims now. They fit fine i will run them in the front with the 9.5 rears.

But i want a wider rim in the rear mostly for apperance. But ive ran to sets of 255s to the threads. And both sets on a 8" rim has worn fast in the middle. Which leads me to believe they need a wider rim.

Stock rims size for the 255 tire. on the vettes where 8.5 for the base, and Z51 cars got the 9.5 rim.

Here is a picture of a 16x9.5 rim with a 255/50/16 no sidewall bulge.

According to the tire size calculator on the link below, 7-9" rims should work fine. You'll probly have to lower tire pressure to compensate the tire being near the rims max tire width to avoid the above mentioned wear in the center of the tire.
