Widest Tire

After doing alot of research for my 87 Iroc and tire width
I found the widest tire out there for my 16'' rims was the
BF G-Force Sport 255-50-16. 10.2 section width and
almost 10" treadwidth. The Dunlop SP Sport 8000 is
also close to this.
Had ordered the BFG 255-50-16 Drag Radial and Tire Discount nice enough to let me switch at no cost. Do
more touring than racing and tread wear a factor.
BFG KDWs 245-50-16 for the front as the 255s to big
and rub in a turn. Car also lowered.

Don't know how the 3rd Gen Firebirds fender well lips
differ from the Camaros.

255's in the front will rub slightly at full lock. - 255/50/16 is the widest tire made in a 16" size. It is also the widest tire that will fit the wheel properly.
- You can get wider 16" sizes in specialty tires (like Hoosier's SCCA models), but for over $200 per tire and they'll last about 1000 miles.... BFG also makes a 295/50/16 Radial T/A, but they don't perform as well as even a half decent 255/50.

I wouldn't recommend 295/50/16 unless your chenging your gears, your speedo will be off quite a bit. Theres almost a 2" difference in tire sizes. Remember 50 isn't sidewall height, its aspect ratio.

I wasn't reccomending them, I was saying that they exist, but suck. I also stated that a 255 is the widest that will properly fit the wheel.
- not trying to flame, just re-itterating what I said....

I run 245/45r16 on my crosslaces. Ohtsu HS401G's. No rub. I also have the different offsets front/rear. If you go wider, would the tire may roll over making the car feel sloppy?

I have Firehawk SZ50s on my GTA rims, 245/50/16s up front, & 255s in back. They are great for wet traction, very good performance when it's dry, & no, they don't "roll over" or feel mushy.

I highly recommend 'em.

According to tirerack.com, there is no Firehawk SZ50 (or SZ50 EP RFT), in anything less than a 17". Discontinued since you bought yours?

I have 245s on my GTA, and want wider ones for the rear too, but haven't found anything wider than the 255s, except the 295/50SR16 of the BFG Radial TA. I had those on my 92 RS, with the stock 16x8 wheels. I'm going to get them, after the xmas bills are paid off.

Firestone Firehawks SZ50 in our size has indeed been discontinued. I got a deal on a set of four from Tirerack when they were selling off the last of them. Think I paid
420 for a set of four shipped for what I believe was the best performance tire made in 245/50/16. Firestone wanted almost double that. They are still in storage ready to go.
