Camaro is shaky in gear at idle. Motor mounts bad?
Hello All,
Just started pulling the Camaro out for summer. I did the normal tune up, wires, plugs, rotor, coil. Car Idles fine in neutral/park, but when I put it in gear it shakes violently.
If I put the car in reverse, it sounds like the catalytic converter is banging off the heat sheild on the passenger side. Drive doesnt cause the cat to rattle, but the car still shakes pretty bad. The RPMs also drop to around 550-600. When I give it a little gas the shake calms down in both instances but doesnt go away.
I know the tranny mount is good, I replaced a couple years back using poly bushing. I looked around the engine compartment, I can't tell by observation as to the condition of the mounts. Are there any easy tricks to figure this out? I did find a smoking gun, chunks of what appear to be dry rotted rubber sitting down around the battery compartment side of the engine bay. The car is an 89 Camaro 5.7L.
Whats the deal with changing engine mounts? Is this job doable for one guy with a jack, and a couple of jack stands? This isnt my daily driver so I can take my time.
Thanks for the help,
Martin
PS I think this belongs in Suspension board, please correct me if I am wrong.
