Wheel heights and tire sizing
Are there any tricks to keeping tires looking “right” when running different height front and rear wheels? I’m trying to pick a tire combination for some 17x9.5 front and 18x10.5 rear wheels (sort of z06 wheels), and can’t quite figure out a rule of thumb WRT what keeps the front tires from _looking_ taller than the rear.
My instinct says that if I kept he sidewall heights the same then I’ll be OK, but GM didn’t even go that far, the used 265/40/17’s on the front (25.4”, 4.2” sidewall) and 295/35/18 in the rear (26.1, 4.05” sidewall), and the fronts definitely don’t look taller than the back.
I really want to run a 305/35/18 nitto DR on the back, but between the extra $120 that they’re going to run per pair compared to some 295/35’s and the fact that I’m having problems finding some in stock (and I’m not sure what the deal is but they’re some special, heavy load tires, I’m wondering if they’re designed to be used on trucks), I’m thinking that probably won’t happen.
My instinct right now seems to be to run Z06 sizes, with 265/40/17’s on the front, but I’m just a little nervous about them looking short on the front of the car.
What would you run? Suggestions?
