Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

Never heard of a shorty torque arm. Most of the aftermarket torque arms are slightly shorter because they use a new tranny crossmember and mount the new torque arm to the crossmember instead of on the back of the transmission.

Just how big of an exhaust system do you play on installing? A SBC doesn't need dual 3" exhaust. It just doesn't flow enough air for pipes that big.

Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

i was looking for the shorty style... where the connection is off the rear of the trans bc my xpipe is hitting the front of the torque arm a few inches from the connection at the rear of the trans... i was hopeing that it would it back enough so the exhaust can be tucked up higher for more ground clearance. im running headman longtubes+3" mandrel extenions+3" xpipe+ 3" dual force mufflers with turn downs...

yea i kno its way to much exhaust for my lightly modded 350... but im building a 500hp 383 as we speak so i'll be putting that exhaust to the test. i noticed a decrease in power/tq in the lower rpm ranges but i feel it more in the upper rpms power increase. it was pre-emptive for my 383.

Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

it bolts to the bottom side of the tranny tunnel. it cuts the total length of the torque arm nearly in half! and you have to drill 14 holes in the floor/tranny tunnel to make it work.

Also check BMR's website for the short torque arm and mounting bracket. Also they have a mount that moves the full length arm off the trans tailshaft.

even with your 383 that's still an overkill exhaust system. My little 355 was pushing somewhere around 500 hp(11.72 e.t's in a 4000# car) and I gained all of nothing going from a good 2-1/2 y to 3" single to dual 2-1/2 w/ an x-pipe. A good 3" single system will flow plenty for 500hp. Then you could go to a 3.5 single if you really needed more flow, all w/o loosing ground clearance or having any other fitment issues.

The jegs arm is shorter and allows more clearance under it than most, but for higher power levels you don't want shorter. 500 is fine, but any more will be pushing the abilities of a short arm.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, duals are far more effort than they're worth. The only true difference is the sound.

Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

"I've said it before, I'll say it again, duals are far more effort than they're worth. The only true difference is the sound."..... and thats why i did it. no other single pipe exhaust sounds as good as mine or any other true dual exhaust. im one of those guys that believes that muscle cars with v8's should have duals or arent muscle cars. thats just me tho. i kno what ur saying i realize it was over kill but the sound is worth the effort and the compliments i get from the sound is worth it as well. also remember im running 28 more cubes than ur 355 and i will be pushing more air( i kno that doesnt constitute the need for a dual 3" system) dual 3"s is more for 600hp and up.

yea im prob not gona run anymore than 500hp so i guess i'll give the shorty style a try. car is not gona be a track car... a daily driver thats out to woop a stang or import at will thats all.

Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

I understand that, as that was my reasoning too. I thought I might gain a few ponies, but the sound was nice. If you do a search on the exhaust forum, there is a thread on my exhaust system. - As for the needed air, I doubt you'll be pushing any more than me. Increasing the stroke makes less difference in air flow than increasing the bore. - Our motors are the same bore, and I turn around 72-7600 rpm. Unless you turn your 383 over 6500, you probably won't be moving any more air.

Re: who sells the shorty style torque arm?

that is true. i really wouldnt wanna run a 383 over 6500 anyways lol but that 355 u built was a screamer. the sound is amazing and i laugh wit the single exhausts bc mine will make ur ***** vibrate 3 feet from the car
