How to lift my rear?

Hi guys,

What would be the easiest/cheapest way to raise the rear of my car and give it that meaner, taller look? Spring Spacers?

Thanks for the input in advance!

Re: How to lift my rear?

taller rear tires would work, although the raked looked went out in the 80s. You could also purchase cargo coil springs from moog for the rear, but it will ride like crap and the spring spacers are unsafe as well.

Re: How to lift my rear?

I have 245/60R/15 right now I believe. I would like to go to 265's but only after i get the rear a lil higher. My Car sits pretty low as it is. I got under it (not an easy task)and I can see that there were sum kind of spacers in between the springs. Were these stock? I thought Stock Camaros were taller than mine is.

Re: How to lift my rear?

i lowered the front of my car. gotta do the back now but it kinda has that raised rear now lol.
its kinda cool acturally.
but i wouldnt really go any higher. then it will just look kinda goofy.

maybe you can just lower the front end alittle bit?

Re: How to lift my rear?

I think the front end is as low as you'd want it.
Spring ISOLATORS are stock, and normal. They are a rubber pad. The 4th gen cars got ones that are taller in the back, you could grab some of those from a JY or dealership, and/or replace the rear springs, chances are they're worn out. I used the cargo coils, Moog CC635,
that's the factory replacement springs for these cars.

I like using tall tires, i'm using 275/60/R15, which is a 29" tire IIRC. This is on a 15x8 wheel however, so it's safer than trying to stretch this size onto a 15x7. I like the look of the raked car, but i'm an '80s child so...
You wanna see raked??? Look up IZCAIN's car on here. Now THAT'S raked! 295/60/R15's !!! That's (almost) overboard though.

275/60 is just under 28" tall.

Re: How to lift my rear?

Ya dont really want to lower the car anymore than it already is. Im used to driving a 4x4 pickup so Im still getting aclimated to drivin this snowplow.
I would like to have the room for sum 265's without them rubbin the inner fenderwells when I hit a dip. Plus whoever had the car before me already scraped up the tailpipes. I might have to look into these new springs you guys are talkin about. Wheres the best place to get them?...Summit?

Thanks again!

Re: How to lift my rear?

Just put GTA ws6 springs in it. It raised the rear on mine by about 2 inches. You can get them from a junkyard or the classifieds. They also ride a hell of a lot better then the crappy berli springs.

I LOVE the look.

ws6= performance suspension package.

I'm pretty sure every GTA came with those springs.. Not sure if they sell them new, but they might... Mine came out of a 1989 pontiac Trans AM GTA.

Re: How to lift my rear?

I just checked... You can get the at autozone for 54 dollars.

http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1125737...ductDetail.htm

They are the variable rate one. The berli springs are not variable rate and have less then half the number of turns as these springs. I'm not sure of the quality of duralast springs, but I wouldnt really count on it being high.

Re: How to lift my rear?

That's most likely the moog CC635's. You can buy those almost anywhere. That's the variable rate aka cargo coil springs.

Re: How to lift my rear?

two words, air shocks, you get them at autozone for like 60 bucks a pair you can raise and lower the car and at will (If you got an air compressor)

and the raked look never goes out of style

Yeah, it didn't completely go out, but it faded since the Ghetto Cruisers moved in, personally I like a little rake, not too much but enough to be noticeable.

Do you have the part # for those air shocks from autozone by chance? I tried to search their site but came up empty handed.

Re: How to lift my rear?

i ran air shocks on my el camino, made it look tough.

autozone's brand is gabriel hi-jackers
if you can't find it on the web check out gabriels site or just go into autozone tell them you need air shocks for an 80-whatever camaro and if they have half a brain they'll come back with a set of gabriels. Oh best part...

LIFETIME WARRANTY!

There real easy to install just remember you need to run an air line, and put the valve in the gas door. Or at least thats what i did.

Do they come with everything I'll need? (ie; the air line and the fitting for the compressor) I'm really thinking of getting those Moog springs along with the air shocks (once I start my new job)

Re: How to lift my rear?

don't have pics as of right now but I went above the gas tank, doesnt get hot so you don't have to worry about it melting... all the way to the gas door(there was enough line for it.) It was actually a pretty "trick" install without the *** being so high...you wouldn't even know I had air shocks.

The best part about them is I would drive into a gas station at stock height someone would compliment my car and say someting like "the only thing I would change is raise the rear end up." Then I would put air in the shocks and drive off with a smile on my face

Re: How to lift my rear?

How did you fasten the hose up? I was thinkin variously space zip-ties maybe? (sorry for all the questions)

Also, I was reading and will this be too much stress on the upper shock mounts? They would be taking the cars weight off of the springs and puttin it on the shocks correct?

Re: How to lift my rear?

Yep i used zip ties(gotta love em')

They do take the weight off the springs and add stress to the shocks but I remember reading in Gabrieals installation manual that you need to keep somehting like 35psi in it at all times and never to excede somehting like 200psi... they work real well and I was actually thinking about getting a pair for my s10 (for towing and badass looks.)
----------
You have to keep some air in to keep them compressed and to handle the weighr, I believe... I drove my el camino for a good three months after installing them and never had a problem

I don't think so,but i never really looked into it... I used to work at autozone and would spend hours just looking up parts for my cars. I was running 10/90 shocks up front in the elco

Re: How to lift my rear?

ahh i hear ya man, i started school last week and already can't take it!

http://www.autozone.com/N,14600661/s...eResultSet.htm
49203 $61.99
$62 isn't a bad price for something that will change the overall look/feel of your car. My advice to you is don't buy beer for a week or two and you'll have that cash pretty quick.

and my final thought...

If only someone would pay me to work on my car!!

HAHAHAHA....this coming from the guy who lives in BEER CITY, WICONSIN!!!

Oh and another question...Are there two seperate air lines? One for each shock? Or do the combine into one? You cant raise on side at a time can you?

And Amen to gettin paid to work on the car man.

Re: How to lift my rear?

combine two-into-one, my dad installs Air ride suspension (when you can do one at a time) on 18 wheelers and i'm trying to get him to do it to my camaro, but that's not just going to cost $62...

lol yeah gotta love milwaukee, where there's more bars then there are people and as many churches as there are bars, so you can repent the very next day!

Re: How to lift my rear?

How much "lift" would you say these can give you over stock? I think it would be cool to be able to jack the *** end up in the air at times and give that raked as hell look. But for the most part I'd like to just keep it from lookin like "Big Mama" is sittin in the back.

Awesome. I cant wait to get paid now.

What about ride quality? I would imagine the more air you pump into them the crappier it would get?

Re: How to lift my rear?

never really thought to much of it, but then again i was driving a hybrid car/truck so i kind of thought the ride quality should suck no matter what. Either way it was awesome to look in my rearview and see my tailgate on an angle. Sure felt like i was turning more heads, too.

Re: How to lift my rear?

Sweet I think I'm gunna get a new set of springs and do everything at the same time. Cant wait to see the insides of my fenderwells and tops of my tires! Of course, then I will have to get some bigger tires. . . . . .

ahhh it never ends.
