Rear tire recommendation?
Rear tire recommendation?
I have a 91 Formula, all stock, with the 16" aluminum rims. I recently blew out a tire and had it replaced with a Goodyear Eagle GT-HR. I have since bought a second one and was going to use those as front tires.
By all accounts the GT's are a competent tire. But my back tires are in need of replacement and I am unsure of what to get. In the rain, the car will break loose in 1st, 2nd and even 3 gear under hard acceleration. However, much more important than wet weather to me is all around dry weather performance.
I don't drag or anything, I just want a great rear tire because I'm sure we all know how the rear end can tend to wander in curves/under hard acceleration. Right now I just have the stock 305 motor, but am hoping to next year maybe throw a 383 in (which, by the way, I will be needing serious help from you guys with).
I wish I could remember the exact tire sizes of my GT's, but I don't have the invoice right now. Bascially I'm looking for a recommendation of a great dry weather rear tire that will fit on my stock 16" rims.
Any pressure recommendations would be great too.
Thank you very much, I really enjoy this place and spend alot of time on thirdgen, and I know how much you guys know.

Re: Rear tire recommendation?
Currently I am running directional Sumitomo 245/50 ZR16. They came with the car but are pretty good.
I tend to buy BF Goodrich tires when I buy new. I like the directionals like the Traction T/A and Comp T/A.
Picking tires is like saying which engine oil is best. Scientific studies vary and everyone's opinion is different. You will not get good answers to these questions.
You will have to try different tires and then stay with what feels the best to you with your driving style and budget.
Even the Kumho directionals are not that much and take quite a beating! I have run them as well but still prefer BFG.
Good luck!

Re: Rear tire recommendation?
Yeah I'm sure everyone has their preferrence.
Will my rear tires be the same size as my front? I have P245/50R16 GT-HR's. 245 will be good for my rear rims?
Any experiance with the Firestone firehawk wide oval? They make them in that size, I can't seem to find many 245 wide that are only 16". TireRack.com has some very favourable reviews on the wide oval.
Any opinions? I think this may be a solid choice.
Any other recommendations would be great, I wouldn't want to try something out that is generally considered to be a poor tire.

Re: Rear tire recommendation?
i ran Fulda Carat extremos in the 245/50/16 size and they worked great. very soft tire so dry traction is great. in the rain the are ok too but with any car in the rain, you'll have to make sacrifices to your driving style to maintain control... you'll never grip as good in the rain as in dry.
i've heard good things about the BFgoodrich Gforce KD and KDW's

Re: Rear tire recommendation?
The 245/50 16 is really the biggest you can run well. You can fit larger tires in there but they start to squish and the car moves around on them. This size seems to work the best with stock rims.
I have never had a problem with tire rub on any of my firebirds. From 4 cyl to transplanted, heavier Olds powered cars these tires do great.
Now you're just gonna have to find the tire to match your style!
