Very loose steering. Help!

My steering is really loose and it makes it kinda scary to drive my car especially at higher speeds. When ever I hit dips in the road or drive over bumps my steering wants to go with the direction of the dips and bumps. Do I need a new steering box or could it be something else?

So amny factors and limited info here. You are going to have to take it to an alignemnt shop and let them check it out in person. They will be able to tell you what is wrong or worn out.

First look at the suspention 101 article. Are you knowledgable on how your car works ie. steering system? The second thing to do is jack up the front of your car. Have someone move the tires by hand from side to side and look at every tierod end. Your looking for any "play" in all the the parts that have a grease fitting. Centerlink, idler arm, tierod ends. You WILL see play. It is very easy to change all these parts and I did them all at once on my car. A simple tie rod/ pitman arm puller is all you need. The one with the scew in center, not the "pickle fork" . Don't forget to get the tierod sleeves too. You can compare the length of the inner/outer from old to new and get them very close. You'll need a touch-up on the toe-in/out from your local shop after your done. The ball joints are harder to check and change. You need to jack up under the lower control arm to check. Do a search, alot of info. 1 more thing, if you find that the steering wheel has to turn a few inches before it starts to move the center link, then you have a worn steering gear. But check the other stuff first before worrying about that. Good luck.

9szqa worry yourself about figuring it out. Take your car to sears and discribe your problem. they will do a front end safety check for free.
