275/40R17s all the way around
275/40R17s all the way around
i read the sticky about wheel and tire fitment and am still figuring out what wheel and tire combo i want to run. right now, i still have the stock 15x7s with 215/60R15s. i read one post by a guy who said he was runing cragar soft 8s in a 17x9 with 5" bs with 275/40s all the way around with no rubbing. i'd like to possibly copy this combo on my 92, but when i was looking at the car the other day, i can just slide a finger between the front tire and the strut. i don't see how such a huge wheel and tire are going to fit. does this mean i have a problem with my car (there is front end damage), or is this the normal gap?

275s should work in the front. the wheels i bought, the owner ran them on his 92 firebird, they worked on mine too. There might be a lil run at full lock, but otherwise its smooth sailing.

I've been running 275/40/17s for several years. Other than a slight rub on the plastic inner fender liner, (Not enough to ever worry about) you will have no issues at all.
Make sure your back spacing is correct. I am using Take off Camaro SS (ZR-1) style wheels with wheel adapters. Andris Skulte (SPD) sells adapters and can help you with the back spacing questions.

I would be hesitant about 275's on the front. I have stock 245/50/16 and you can definately tell.
If you have never driven a car with wide tires before, you might not understand. Sometimes you will be driving, and a bump or trough in the roads surface will just grab the wheel and turn it. The car will want to go its own way and you will be fighting with the steering wheel.
I really noticed this on my FWD monte carlo I had. It came stock with 205/70/15 tires, and cruised like a dream on the highway. But it couldnt corner if it tried. But the steering wheel was light, and it tracked straight on the road.
When I got rims for it, I went 245/45/18 . The car handled alot better, but rode really rough. Also, it made the steering really stiff. And it definately made the steering wheel jerk around alot more as the tires would get caught in road grooves or the crowning.
