Steering gear adjustment nut broke??

Now what...

I was trying to tighten some slack up in my steering and was loosening the jam nut and the nut broke the shank off even with the gear cover. I am no longer worried about slop in the steering. Just want to make sure without that jam nut I will be ok. I.E. it won;t come apart while turning on some back road?

The adjustment screw will not move either. I tried removing the gear cover and it would not unscrew.

Steering works fine, at least as much as it did.

Re: Steering gear adjustment nut broke??

Ok, so I have now answered my own question. Came out to the garage to work more on El Diablo (the car) and I find a nice puddle of power steering fluid under the gear box. Evidently that nut keeps fluid from coming out as well. So I will be changing the steering gear this weekend. Did discover my problem though. I could finally see that the center link bushings were shot.

So if anyone else sees this on a search because they broke their adjustment nut/shaft, go ahead and replace the unit.
