airbags?

hello guys n girls i've got an 89 iroc-z i'm working on getting the rear to bite harder and more even.

so currently i'm going to buy tokico 5 way adjustable shocks n struts and a new set of 550/150 springs for the car. Also boxed lca's and lcarb's.

so here is the 2 main questions, providing my car like most tends to bite harder on the passenger side than the driver i would like to do 1 of the following.

1) use a lower hole on the lca on the driver side as opposed to the passenger (i know everyone is probably going to freak at this idea but, How will this affect handleing as long as the lca's aren't in a crazy angle either direction?

Will this do what i want it to by staggering the ds and ps holes by 1 slot(make the driverside bite harder).

or the much more popular idea

2) use air bags and use like 25 lbs on the ds and 120lbs on the passenger. If so what bags do you guys reccomend? what kind of price with bags + fill hose would i be looking at? how durable are these bags? Will my ride quality under normal circumstances be better as i would expect? Will this illy affect my handleing if i run them with different psi's compares to the left and right side?

thanks a lot definetly a lot of questions and some have been gone over before but, i'd realy like to compact it in to this 1 thread so i can get the story straight.

Re: airbags?

still would like to figure this out about the uneven left to right planting problem associated with our cars.

uneven left to right planting problem associated with our cars
And our cars would be different from any other cars in that respect .... how?

Think about it. You take this big rear end thing, and you give the tires traction. When you do that, the axles can't turn inside the tubes. But, you put torque on the pinion (in a clockwise direction viewed from the front), which therefore tries to rotate the ENTIRE locked-up-solid (because the tires won't let the axles spin) assembly clockwise, viewed from the front. Which of course, raises the right rear tire off the ground.

I don't see anything 3rd gen F-body specific anywhere in there about the physics or mechanics.

EVERY kind of car has that EXACT same problem.

The Chevelle people, for example, often use pretty much the same solution we do; air bags. 1st/2nd gen Camaro or old Mopar people, with leaf springs, deal with it a different way. Some kinds of cars, the easiest solution involves preloading the front sway bar to put cross weight on the LF/RR tires. Trust me though, it's NOT JUST US. Everybody fights the same issue.

notice that nowhere in my post did i say anything about it only being about our cars ;-). I'm aware it has to do with live axle cars in general, that and those that have posi of course notice it much more........

i'm not arguing physics, or factual information about cars i've never driven, i'm trying to decide if running offset lca mounting points would suffice or do i need to run airbags, if i need to run airbags what kind of price am i looking at, how durable are they, and how will they affect my overall handleing.

i think you just read in to the post to much there......

Really!?!?!?!?

May I quote you again?
the uneven left to right planting problem associated with our cars
Not that it has alot to do with solving the issue at hand; simply, it's a universal problem ALL cars face. Not even just live axle ones. A motor and drive line that rotate clockwise viewed from the front, tend to raise the right rear and left front tires; that's just the way it is. Posi doesn't really have anything to do with it, except to the extent that it improves traction in general.

Airbags are pretty durable as far as that goes. Lots of people have them. You deflate them for normal street driving though, air them up only at the strip, so they have basically no effect on handling except at the strip.

Not sure of the price.... I know they're pretty cheap though. Sounds like you have enough tied up already that a couple more coins aren't a make-or-break issue. I can't feature a set to fit these cars being even as much as $100.

I wouldn't run different LCA settings on the street. Might be OK at the strip, if they weren't TOO different; but things could get real weird and out of hand in a hurry on the street, if the car was asymmetrical that way. NBD though, it only takes a few seconds to pop the bolts out and change the setting at the track.

Re: airbags?

yah i did say "associated with our cars" i didn't say just with our car, i've owned 3 cars 1 was a muddin truck and 2 were f-body camaros so basically my knowledge on others is quite limited........ basically i said that just to get the point across that it's a problem on my car and i want to fix it. on the other hand thanks for the lesson on how the drivetrain enhances this 1 wheel heavy planting sort of affect.

I figured a limited slip rear would enhance this affect even more so though maybe i'm wrong. Although what i was trying to get across was that posi rears show 2 stripes and mine always has 1 darker stripe. In otherwords i probably never would have noticed without it or even if i did i wouldn't have cared because, it wouldn't matter anyways. Should have been a more clear i suppose.

either way thanks a lot sofa that pretty much answers all of my questions.

should help a lot over my first track experience with this iroc getting a best of 2.46 60 footer lol (yes i did say 2.46).

i have terrible rearend hop currently and that was with a set of dayton rear tires that were completely dead (showing threads).

either way new lca's/lcarb's and the new shocks/springs should rid the wheel hop and i already have new falken ziexs on it in all 4s plus lighter rims now so i doubt i'll do any worse than a 2.2.

Re: airbags?

2.46
Ouch!!!!

Good luck... LCARBs by themselves should help out quite a bit, once they're tuned to your car, and of course the new other parts; then if you still have a problem lifting the RR, airbags should help. Sounds like you're on your way to lowering that time.

People can usually get down to 1.7x or so without too much difficulty, on the stock suspension in these cars. Sometimes even lower. So there's hope.
