Steering Gear Box

I have about a 1/16" or so of play in my lower shaft from the gear box to pitman arm. I can see the shaft wobble ever so slightly and make a click. (89 Form WS-6) How can I get this out? I have heard to tighten up the adjusting screw just about a 1/2 turn or so. Will this work or is there a rebuild kit available. Is this even enough to worry about. Car wants to track some. Noticed it while I was replacing the tie rods, drag link and idler arm.

Thanks

Re: Steering Gear Box

1/16" of play is not enought to worry about. Your steering cannot be "tight" If it is it will bind and break.
If you drive a 2wd auto, when you put it in gear, you may hear a slight clunk.
Same car/truck but 4wd. That clunk can be more pronounced, because all gears have some play, so they don't bind. 4wd's have more gears, (more play thorought the drivetrain), that is why it is more pronounced.
Same idea steering, you need to have play in the gearbox or it will break.
And a 1/2 turn to adjust is a lot.

Re: Steering Gear Box

Thanks. I've rebuilt everything under the car but the box and had it lined up. Handles great now. Thanks for the info on the box.
