subframe removal
I searched and didn't find anything.
I want to remove myfront sub frame while my engine is out so I can clean and paint it. has anyone done this? I'm sure someone has.
I haven't gotten a chance to look too closely at it yet. Is it possible to unbolt it and roll it out as a unit? Will the Coil springs stay in the pockets?
Just gauging how hard this will be when I start to tackle it.

If you had just read this page before posting, you would have seen this, about 20 posts below yours.

No you cannot leave the springs in; the bottom of them is on the control arms (attached to the K-member), and the top is on the chassis. Likewise, the bottom of the strut is on the spindle which attaches to the CA, and the top attaches to the chassis. So, probably the easiest way to deal with it, would be to have the chassis on a lift, with the CAs on jack stands or something, and a jack stand underneath the K-member; unbolt everything, including the bottom of the strut, the brake lines, the steering linkage, and all the rest of that stuff that has one end on the chassis and one end on the K-member; and slowly and carefuly, raise the car. Might not be a bad idea to put some chains around the springs to prevent nasty surprises.
Might be a REAL GOOD IDEA also, to put in new ball joints and control arm bushings, since you will have already done all the hard work getting to them; and replace the motor mounts too.

Re: subframe removal
break out the plasma cutter - the "subframe" on our cars is not unbolt-able. It is part of the body/structure. The k-member is removable, but will require dissassembly, which, as sofa said, is probably due/over-due a rebuild anyhow. Thread
