The Previous owner of my 92 Rs Had Previously had the bushings ,and basically all the rubbers replaced,the only thing he didnt replace was the steering box and steering column. Now the problem i'm having is that my steering is still loose. I believe that this is being caused by either the steering box or steering column. How Would I be able to tell whether it is one the other or both? Any advice would be appreciated

The column itself would only have steering slop in the rag joint. A fairly inexpensive and simple replacement. Pull the shaft, drill out the rivets and instrall new rag joint with supplied screws to replace the rivets.

Then if that don't solve things..... its the steering box.

10:1 odds it is both.

 

I took a closer inspection and have come to the conclusion its the rag joint and the steering box both worn out. (155k) So I need to go to autozone and order some stuff up.

I was going to change my rag joint today, but it seems my play is in the box as well. I have almost 180K miles on my car.

 

If the tilt is loose in the column it can add play to the steering.

I've not had good luck with reman boxes and gave up on them a few years back. I've rebuilt four or five boxes since then and always came out with a better box than any of the reman I've tried.

 

Did you try adjusting the box first? They have a wear adjustment on top. The steering boxes on these cars are seriously over-built and almost never actually wear out, yet people replace them all the time anyway. The only reason to pull one out is if they leak.

 

The box should really be pulled in order to properly adjust it. The over center adjustment (on top) should be touched only after the input plug has been set properly.

Boxes don't really wear out but they are killed at times by the guy that cranks an 1/8th turn too much on that top adjustment nut without understanding what he's doing.
