Back halfing my 86 IROC
I am in the process of getting my Camaro back halfed, by a company in Winnipeg called SANDALE. The guy at the shop doing the work is Troy, he is our Chip Foose in Manitoba. I am putting in a narrowed 9 " ford, with Detroit Locker with 4.56, four link with coil overs. The car will use 18.5 x 31.
I did the front end, but forgot to take pictures, will add them later, I used Tubular chrome moly K-member and A-arms, Koni yellows, J & M Strut mounts, Spohn sway bar and adjustable wonder bar, unisteer rack and pinion and bump steer kit, moog 5662 front springs
Here are some pictures as the back half is being done

Actually a plasma cutter, Troy had stated that this is one of the cleanest 3rd gen they had seen, no rust. If you live in Canada you know what rust is

572 with a procharger eh? Holy schnike!!!
That's a big job alright.
I don't even want to know what the bill for that is going to be.
Heck of a job cutting it that straight, wonder what type of jigging they use to do that...
Tranny to be used>?

WTF!
Rack and Pinion steering? OH man I have got to do that. Could you point me in the direction of where you got your instructions? Seriously, I would like to know.

I never received instructions, I ran a few Speed Shops for several years when I was younger, and used to do it all the time. If you have questions I will help, but their is probably several more people on this board more qualified than me. I can tell you the parts I used and where I got them from. It really was not that complicated to do

Checked on the car today and they had welded in the crossmember and frame rails and was working on the roll bar, 4 link mounts welded on the frame rails and diff. Troy said diff will be hanging before the end of the week

This is probably a stupid question but are the frame rails just welded to the floorboard and cage? Seems like a weak point

Thanks for the compliment. This will be a 100% street car, if I wanted to go back to drag racing it would be back in a dragster again, not a door slammer

Re: Back halfing my 86 IROC
Didn't need too, the suspension is hanging, that is the closest it gets to the fender and I have more than a inch clearance on each side of the fender. When it sits on the ground clearance is even wider. That is what I went with a 31 inch tall tire, because all the cars that I saw before with the same changes, the tallest tire they could put on without modifing the fenders was the 31

Re: Back halfing my 86 IROC
Not flared but widened as in front to rear opening. Top of the fender isn't an issue. It's the front and rear of the opening that causes problems with tall tires. I simple cut the lip off the front and rear of the opening. You need at least 1" away from the tread to allow for tire growth even with those Sportsman Pro's.
This is what it takes to widen a fender

I was talking about front and rear, I have more tham 1 inch on both the front and rear, I just have the Sportsman, I did not buy the pro, because I was looking for more tire wear. I am planning on going to Sportsman Radials down the road

That is friggin wild. That is such a sweet setup. All that clean tin work, the clean bends. I assume the cage will be painted to tie in with the car in some way? With carpet on the tubs, or paint there as well?

Re: Back halfing my 86 IROC
They will be priming and painting all the tin, frame, rollbar. Back area of the car will be carpeted to match the rest of the carpet.
You should see the trick door they made for the fuel cell, I had them mount the fuel cell under the tin between the frame rail, so the top of the fuel cell is flush with the tin. They built a fuel door you open and then can access the fuel cell. I will show pictures after it is done.
Tyler who is doing the tin work, he said once everyting is welded the use a seam sealant so it gives that factory look, and of couse makes sure moisture can not get into the car

Re: Back halfing my 86 IROC
Just was looking at the progress of the car, suspension is now totally welded, anti roll was installed, and they are just starting to weld in sheet metal.

Putting in a swing out bar on the roll bar, to get in and out of the car easier. Before the comments start, the side bar may not be legal for NHRA, but remember this is a 100% street car, the bar was designed for my comfort and to tie the car together

Swing out side bars used to be legal to 7.50 but may only be to 8.50 now.

Tires are 18.5 x 31 x 15, ride is fine with the 4 link, only thing is, it is a bit noisey, I used rod ends instead of bushed ends. They do not recommend bushed ends with vehicles over 500hp. The engine that I will be using with be over 800hp

Your car looks great! After looking at this thread again and again, I decided to have my car back halfed. I have already gave my deposit and my car is almost ready to drop off at the chassis shop. I can't wait.
