How do I remove old A Arm Bushings?

OK, first things first. I DID actually go out and purchase a hand press. Cheaper than shop labor, eh?

Short of mass carnage, burning and chopping, how can I use this press to REMOVE the old bushing? Keep in mind I don't have them in front of me just yet. If I did, the answer might have already presented itself!

This may or may not help. I took the whole A-arm to my local Napa and they had a small shop in the back. They just used a torch to melt the bushing out and a press to install the new one. Good luck.

Use a threaded rod. Insert it through the bushing. Put a thick washer on that is large enough to grab the bushing add nut.

On other end cut a piece of pipe or use a large socket that has an id large enough for the bushing to enter. Put a washer and nut on that end too.

Grab an impact attach to the end with the pipe. put a socket and braker bar on the other end.

Tighten the nut with the impact and it will pull the bushing out.

Similar to SDIF's method above. If you are changing your ball joints (I hope you are if you got control arms out) you can use the ball joint press to remove & install C-Arm bushings. Tool rental free at Auto Zone & Advance Auto. See pictures in post link below.

Dont burn them out.
I always drill them. I take about a 5/16'' bit and drill the rubber over and over untill it can be tapped out with a hammer and punch.

I never did get mine out, and the machine shop near me said the labor would be more than actually buying a new a-arm with the bushings already in. I found this link when I was looking to do it myself. Pretty cool home made tools he's got there:

Re: How do I remove old A Arm Bushings?

You want to know the easy way all most any one can do?
This is what I did.
First I drilled out the old rubber, I took a regular drill and a regular drill bit (think I used a 5/16''). I drilled the rubber over and over again untill there wasn't much left of it. Then knocked out the rubber core with a hammer and a metal rod.
Once you get the rubber out see if your'e lucky, your new bushing might be able to reuse the old bushing tubes. If they fit knock them in with a rubber hammer.
If they dont fit cut the old bushing tube with a sawsall. Just saw the tube in half. Then use a hack saw or the saws all to carefully cut down the length of the tube from the inside. This will releave the tight fit the bushing tube has while in stalled in the control arm.
Once you make these cuts the remains of the tubes can easly be removed useing only a claw hammer.
One good square hit form a 10lb sledge hammer can reinstall new bushing tubes. A press is prefered.
