Steering click?

My steering has a slight click (one click) at any speed and whether I am turning sharply to park or just changing lanes etc
It seems to be in the same spot everytime, near center.

Eg if I change lanes I'll feel it pop once as I move over, and then pop once more in the same place when I straighten the wheel...

The car runs straight as an arrow and the steering is nice and tight (thanks to new ball joints, that was a LONG DAY!!) but the click is still there. I also have very minimal play and everything else is nice and responsive so I think most of my front end is in good shape.

I know I do need new wheel bearings to be done next week but would I feel that click in the steering wheel? (and wouldn't that be more noticable in general?)

I have searched other clicks but no one elses seems to be the same....

I can feel it more than hear it....

Any tips from the pro's would be apprciated.

Re: Steering click?

Tie rod ends comes to mind. Or idler arm, pitman arm, center link.... maybe.
It might be the strut towers as well, but I don't remember them doing it at driving speeds (at least not in my car). Have a friend turn the wheel, and look under the hood and try to track it down. But I'd replace the wheel bearings first to make sure that's not it.

Re: Steering click?

Thanks - I am def hoping it is just the bearings (gonna do some more bushings when I do those too, hopefully that will get it.

(I already have new struts in, only a few weeks ago)

PS I love your scoop/stripe combo hood, nice mix - many scoops look like a$$ on our cars.

Re: Steering click?

I meant the strut towers/mounts, not the struts. They can wear out and make noises in the steering.
Thanks! I took some time planning the look of the car. I get compliments from Camaro, Honda, and Ford guys, so I guess I did well lol.

Re: Steering click?

ah ha....I think if it was the mounts I would hear it more often though but of course I could be wrong. (noises while cornering etc)
I think I am gonna look at the center link first....

It shows that you planned well - the stripes and the scoop go really well together and look way better that either one would on their own.
----------
PS - I also have a squeak on the front end when it travels up/down (like over speed bumps, but NOT when cornering).
I can't really hear it more on one side than the other which suggests is may be in the middle....so center link bushings seem like a good place to start...

Re: Steering click?

The sound from the up/down movement may be the control arm bushings. Mine squeak, but they're polyurathane. I'd replace the wheel bearings, then find a way to get under the car with the weight on the wheels (SAFELY) and have someone turn the wheel and you take a look. Diagnosis before buying parts is alot cheaper and easier than throwing parts at it (I know from experience).

You can click the picture in my signature to get to my Car Domain to see more, if you like.

Re: Steering click?

Yeah I do have the LCA bushings, just waiting to get them in (ran out of time saturday due to ball joint "issue"! LOL)

I completely agree, but at least these kind of parts are cheap and all are 16 yr old stock so replacing is a good idea anyway. I think I'll just do the bearings/bushings and then see if it helps.

I'll def take a look at ur car some more when I get home - the quick AND knowledgable replies are GREATLY appreciated, thanks

Re: Steering click?

It's not a problem. It's what forums like this are for! I finally found out what is causing the popping in my suspension.... the K-member bolts were loose.

I have some shots of the interior. I think they're on page 4. I have about 7 pages I think. The pages are under the black heading that says Aaron’s Chevrolet Camaro:

Ah yes, I must remember to check all the bolts are tight while I am there!!

Very nice interior man, I like mine but urs makes mine look like poop LOL

Although once I re-finish my sub enclosure it will sweeten mine up a LOT!!!

Re: Steering click?

I've not done anything to mine other than install 4th gen seats and the 145 speedo cluster. It's just clean stock mostly 3rd gen lol.
What color's your's? What you planning with the sub enclosure?

Re: Steering click?

"clean" is the main word in ur last sentence. Less is more and the seats are plenty. Looks great.

Well I already did a fibreglass enclosure (made from scratch) and did some really cool things with it, but it isn't practical.
So now I actually know what I am doing with the fibreglass I wanna re-do it even better but more practical.
That'll be done once I am done messing with my front end LOL

...means a week with no 12's in my car tho ;(

PS - I designed a one of a kind set up for mine that I have never seen elsewhere. ZERO loss of visibilty over the rear shelf AND I still have the trough in the back to put my groceries! All with x 12's + amp.

Re: Steering click?

Got my new rotors, pads and bearings in today.Quite a nice job really.
Messy but very straight forward. (as long as u have all the stuff ready - I packed the bearings the day before)

My steering "click" is MUCH better, when I really tried to make it do it I can still detect it faintly so hopefully my LCA bushings will tighten it up that little bit more as I am pretty sure they are dead.

Re: Steering click?

That's good. I'm glad you are working it out. What else have you replaced?

It turned out that the noise in mine that someone told me was loose K-member bolts ended up being a noise made by two sections of the front sub-frame rubbing because of a broken spot weld. Going Wednesday to get it fixed.
