Clearcoating rims.

So I've seen the https://www.thirdgen.org/sergiowheels article on wheels. I'm just curious about what the cons are of not having clearcoat. The article talks about removing and then polishing at the end.

Won't the rims oxidize? Can I clearcoat right afterwards? Should I polish and then clearcoat? or just clean as best as possible and then spray clearcoat on?
Any suggestions on applying?

Those are a lot of questions, sorry. I'd like to make my rims look as good as possible, as long as possible, and I don't want to spend $600 on new ones.

Thanks so much,

ttt.
I've painted the rims and they turned out nicely. I've since polished, and want to know if it's even neccesary to clearcoat. they look so nice now.
