Car All Over The Road

Posting for my uncle he has a 1991 chevy camaro and lately the steering is really touchy the slightest movement of the steering wheel causes the car shoot off in that direction,or when when you are coming out of a turn the steering wheel and vech usually comes back to you (ie straightens out ) the vech doesn't do that it continues with direction of the turn. Any One understand what im tryin to explain or know what would cause this. I have heard it could possible be a steering box, but not sure

i had a similiar problem a few years back, it happened after i got new rear tires from americastire, they put shorter/ stiffer sidewall tires on the rear and even driving like a grandma the car was almost impossible to control

When's the last time the car was aligned? Have any of the steering components ever been replaced, such as the center link, or tie rods? The caster and toe-in alignment settings affect how well the steering self-centers. It sounds like there is some serious slop in the steering, I would start by replacing parts, and getting it aligned.

Welcome to TGO. I'd check for binding in your steering components. If something's binding it will not want to center while turning and extra effort will be required to make small corrections, causing a twitchy, overcorrecting feel. Most likely components are the ball joints. A steering box that's been cranked down too much can cause this over center but usually not so much at larger turn rates...twitchy, doesn't want to return when lane changing but returns to some degree when making a 90.

Best to probably take it to an alignment shop and explain the problem to them, they can put it on the rack and ensure the wheels turn freely while the suspension is loaded...while they check the alignment.

Just tell them not to replace anything worn before checking first with you. Replacing most of this stuff is simple and even if you have to pay an additional inspection fee you may save money doing some of it yourself.
