manual steering box

i just got a manual box from an s15 yesterday and i was wondering how do you add fluid to it. i ask because when i turn the pitman arm i can feel the gears in it so i figure it may need new fluid. or is that normal? can anyone tell me how to do this and what and how much it takes?

i wanted to do this before i install it and have to take it out if its bad. also does anyone have any tricks for getting the pitman arms off i still have the s15 one on the new pump and mine is still in my car.

Re: manual steering box

A manual steering box is full of grease not oil.

To get the pitman arm off, you need a pitman arm puller.

ok is there a way to add grease? or is it a sealed unit and yourun till it stops working?

i guess what i meant about the pitman arm is how to get the nut loose once removed from the car.

Re: manual steering box

Top top cover can be removed to fill with grease.

The pitman arm nut is usually removed with an impact gun. You could always try putting it in a vise to remove the nut if it's not in a vehicle.

Re: manual steering box

ok i added grease and when i pulled the cover off i there was some pressure built up that was released when i seperated the cover from the box. is this normal? also i noticed that if you tried to turn the shaft the steering colum connects to it was hard to turn and now it turns pretty easilysince i pulled the cover. is this box still good?

i also have another one that turns easily that i pulled from another truck from the yard and i havent taken the cover off of. should i use this one instead?
