Not your average tire question
First off, I read the 2 page thread about the best tires for our cars. I also read a few other threads where people argued over the best tire. I was left with my original question, so I will make this new thread to ask it..
I am looking for the hands-down best tire regardless of price. I don't care if it costs me 1,500 for all four tires, I just want the best. I'm looking for superior cornering traction on dry street roads (little to no track/drag use) and superior traction in every aspect of daily road use.
To better phrase it, what's the best traction tire you can buy that's street legal and not a slick (if slicks are the best traction, i'm not even sure)?
I know there's awesome tires like the Goodyear F1's and Falken high performance series, but are there better tires that sacrifice wet weather traction for even more grip?

Michelins top rated. Pilot Sport Cup....the treadwear is only 80 though. Also need 18's

I don't care if the tires only last 15-20,000 miles. I love the Pilot Sport Cup tires, too bad they need 18's I have 17's.
I don't mind if suggestions are for wheels other than 17", just post em up anyway. By the way thanks for the response.

i just got on my michelin pilot ps2, when i bought them i was thniking the exact same thing you were, there are stickyer tires but not in sizes that work well with our cars, i spent close to 1 year reading and reaseraching tires before deciding on theese, i have not been able 2 loose any tractioun, even when i try to, slam on the brakes the tires stick, go too fast around a corner, and guess what.... the tires stick. my secong choice would have been the Goodyear F1's ds-g3 also a great tire, just not as sticky as the SP2, from what i've read

In no particular order,
Nitto NT05 (200 treadwear, but getting some good reviews)
Toyo R888 (~100 treadwear, used on "Bad Penny" if you subscribe to Hot Rod Magazine or follow the "Pro-Touring" scene at all)
Nitto NT01 (R-compound, no treadwear given)
I think you're looking for something between the better autocross "Street Touring" category (140 min treadwear) tires and "R-compounds" with a semblance of useful life. Just understand that the heat cycling encountered in normal driving will make much of the "extra" grip that they have compared to Max/Extreme Performance street tires go away, although at a slower rate mileage-wise than if all of the driving was in competition or open-tracking. 10,000 mile old (or 2000 mile old, for that matter) Azenis aren't what they were at 50 miles, either.

What is the climate like in your area?
I have the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 which I loved when I lived in PA. But now that I live in the Seattle area, I don't care for the GS-D3. The Goodyears really need 70+ degrees air temp to work well in my expirence. Different "Summer" tires have different "minimum" temperatures.

I care about the performance in temps ranging from 60 - 100. I won't be pushing the car for performance outside these temp ranges.

Hey Tpx, this has nothing to do with your question, I was just wondering, is that bumper cover on your car a stock '84? I thought '82- '84s had the holes in the nose?

it's a 1982-1983 z28 front, maybe it's too dark to see but there are fog light holes if that's what you mean. If you're talking about the six rectangular holes at the very bottom those are z28 specific for '82 and '83 years afaik.
